				cost to install ssi??

			hey,

my local garage wants about $300 to install ssi on my sc. then he says it's another $300 or so to fabricate an oil line that's necessary. (not the hard line, which came with the ssi). does that sound accurate? it seems quite a bit high to fabricate a line, but I don't know. thanks.

You should check with Wayne at Pelican, he can set you up with the parts and oil line for the conversion.

Installing the SSIs is not difficult, however, if exhaust studs snap the job can be more time consuming. It just depends on whether, given the recent winter weather you would rather spend about 4 hours of quality time with the 911 or have somebody else do it. I may be wrong but I thought only one oil line needs to be moved. Wayne will know. Since we live so close, I would be happy to take a quick look with you to see what shape the exaust studs are in. I'm in the middle of several winter projects, and my SSIs are off as a result. If you are interested I can show you what all needs to be done. Your choice, just let me know.

I live in an apartment building in Denver, so it's not really 4 good hours with the 911, lots more and when it's 6 degrees out, they aren't good hours. ha ha ha

Are you sure your mechanic didn't say he would fabricate heater lines?

The SSIs may require a new oil line, however these are readily available and don't require fabrication. But your existing heater hose plumbing will not work with SSI, and I am not aware of anything on the market that kits this up. This require fabrication. The cost would depend on the quality of the fabrication. Simple hoses can be rigged and $300 would be excessive. However a really nice heater setup fabricated from Stainless or Aluminum.... $300 could be a bargain. $300 for the install sounds a little high, but not outrageous. If the studs snap, the $300 would be a bargain.

If I'm not mistaken, I paid about $800 for my SSI's. They came with everything required including the new oil line. The labor charged was for 5 hours. However this included making another cut out in the rear skirt and installing a dual out Danske. The dual in/out Danske was another $400. None of my studs broke. If one had, I was told up front that the labor hours would increase as required.

check out my tech article about this...it is a relatively simple project...

if your studs are destined to break they will even if it is your mechanic so the fix will be the same... ask him if the 300 includes any broken head studs...which I doubt it will... search the archives...lots of info on this stuff. EDIT: hahahaha yeah exhaust studs...I am so used to SC head stud posts... Last edited by 82SC; 01-23-2002 at 12:32 AM.. |

$300.00 would definitely not include fixing broken HEAD studs, you probably meant exhaust studs.

Also, SC's should not require any modifications to heater system, it should all hook-up just fine. Mods are on carrera(3.2), which has different plumbing. $300 still sounds OK, but only have a reputable Porsche specialist work on car if not DIY- they are not so difficult as much as unique and unfamiliar wrench will f' it up. 95% of the job is getting the old studs and oil lines off. With a helper, all the other work is relatively easy. If done with acytelene, should be no problem. The inner oil line off the thermostat is tough to get to if you try not take the outer one off.

Hmm. I'm concerned. My wrench (who has been great) quoted me $2k for parts- SSI's, Muffler, oil lines, and heater hoses, and then $800 for labor. I think the $2k part is OK, assuming he is talking about a $900 GHL muffler, but the labor part seems waaaaayyy off. It is an '83 SC, so the heater hoses should be OK, and 6 hours of his time should only be $450. Does he plan on breaking exhaust studs???????

Any thoughts? I am more and more tempted to try this myself.... |

Yes, $2800.00 for SSI's installed,(w/muffler, etc.), is ridiculous, IMO. I will be doing install myself while motor is out for other work, SSI's are $850 from Pelican and less in perfect used cond., new Dansk s.s. muff is $300, oil line is $50(?). If you get lucky and find 'em used, (they go quick), whole job could be well under $1k. Does that answer your question?

Thanks, Speeder. Doofdog has offered to help me, so I will probably do it myself. I priced the parts:

SSI's: ~$850 Muffler: $150 - $1000 Oil Lines: $50. Add another $100 for misc parts and it can be under $1200 with all new parts. I am taking the plunge and will do this myself..... |
