How long for oil to warm up?
On a 3.0L SC motor, outside temps around 30-50 degrees, easy street driving 30-50 mph...how long would you estimate that the oil temps would take to get up to 150+?
Thanks.

Oil cooler.
If it's cold enough the exterior (fender) oil cooler may never be put into use (thermo. never open). Had this happen last week on a 3+ hour drive @ ~freezing.

That was another question I had, at what temp does the thermo open?

I take 3 or 4 minutes for the engine to get warm enough to accept the throttle and drive easy for about 10 minutes before driving fast. Also in the winter I run the engine about 2 quarts low (Oil just touching the Bottom of the stick) Also I usually do not drive the car to work (Only 4 to 5 miles) so My Wife is the only one that dives it because she has about 20 miles to go and ny then, the oil is up to temp. WHen It is below 25 to 30 degrees we do not drive it to work and only drive it when we have somewhere over 20 to 25 miles and it will be on the Highway.
At least once a Month we take it for a real ride (Over 50 miles) so that the Oil can be cleaned of the Water and the entire system is cleaned out. They may have been made in Germany, but they are not for Cold short trips!

If you get a flashlight and look on the left side, behind the bezel, you can see small marks w/ a few Celcius temps marked. I made a graphic on a card with the temps that each bar indicated and keep it in my glovebox. Interpolate. 90-100C (210F+/-) is about normal operating temp, on a mild day. When it's cold, or up at 11,000 feet in the summer, it doesn't get much above 180F (85C) and the thermostat doesn't open at all, lines are cold. Last edited by tcar; 12-10-2010 at 02:04 PM.. |
