oil cooler scoop? yes or no

Im thinking about getting one of these things that fits where the side marker up front is at for the oil cooler...its cheap and easy to do.

funny thing is, i almost NEVER see anyone with this done on their car...maybe its just asthetics but...im kinda skeptical as to how much of a difference it actually makes, any feedback is appreciated, thnx

JMHO,.....

Those scoops are indeed cheap and easy to install, but I question their real effectiveness.

We've had far better success controlling oil temperatures using a Carrera front valence, sans fog lights and using the opening (minus the fog light mounting bar) to direct air right on the cooler. We also install ducting in the fender to ensure that no air gets around or under the cooler.

Works good, lasts long time,....

The scoop was originaly designed for people that don't want to do a bunch of modifications to their car to get a little help in the cooling department. If you are doing some serious racing then I would suggest you do what steve said, however if you don't want to change your valance and do a bunch of ducting and possibly do some unreversible changes then the scoop is a cheap and easy way to get some extra cooling to you oil. I have sold about 2000 of these scoops and have not had 1 part returned because the customer wasn't satisfied with the product. My phone number and email address goes out in every box I sell and I assure you Wayne would let me know if there were a bunch of returns. To top it all off, if the scoop doesn't do what you think it should, just reurn it. I stand behind all my products.

It all depend on the air temps and how long you'll be driving...

I drive my 911E with a front fender Carrera oil cooler with no additional ventilation. Thermostat set to open at 210 degrees. On a 90 degree day in stop and go L.A. traffic, never seen the temp go over 210.

At Streets of Willow, for a POC track event, on a 108 degree day, after a 20 minute run session at 10/10's, the temp was 220ish. (Down from a high of over 250 before I had the cooler installed.)

My opinion is that properly designed/built oil tubing, a properly installed oil cooler, and correctly set and installed thermostat, are all much more important than additional air flow.

+1; works better, costs less:

Turn signal indicator moved to where the turn signal is.

Polypropylene sheet ducting closing off the bottom.

thanks for the input guys...most of the driving i do with the car ('74) is highway anyways, i like your solution with the mesh Steve but thats a little too modded for my tastes, guess the overall opinion is that the scoop might help a little but not a whole lot

I don't think anyone was taking a shot at your product I think it is a matter of the intended purpose....again street/track etc.

For the street driver concerned about high temps all the time (mod it and forget it with cosmetics in mind) vs. the track driver that takes out the fog, the turn signals and the headlight, puts a softball sized hole drilled behind the bucket is a track person. Cosmetics be damned. Does all that the morning they get to the track and/or put it all back for the drive home...

To say it (your scoop) does nothing - is unfair IMO. Any of these solutions are effective to a certain degree - more effective used together. Cheap and easy.

Iv'e got one and no complaints here. How much does it help? Can't say for sure as I never took measurments before and after. My $.02 is that anything you do to improve air flow to a cooler will help. What I like about this is that is installs easy and is pretty unobtrusive, looks like it is just a part of the vehicle.

I've had one on my SC for several years. I also have a real temp gauge with numbers vs. the white/red scale. My unscientific real world results say the scoop lowers temps by aprox. 5-10 degrees depending on conditions and road speed.

I have one in the shelf. Made notes of temps this past weekend. After I install the scoop I will report back. Even if the improvement is only 5 to 10 degrees, that is good enough to keep my temps at 210 on a hot, humid summer drive in Charleston.

yeah im not expecting a world of difference from the scoop, and i would agree that any additional air going to the cooler is a good thing, interested to see what you find out mca...i can say that i definetly have no interest drilling in a whole new bumper...its just a street car

I didn't see much of a drop from elevated temps.....when I went with a Carrera cooler, it maintained the temps better during "spirited" driving. I had a euro brass row before, then added another center mount cooler when the 3.6 went in replacing the 3.0.

Your thermostat regulates operating temp. Coolers keep it there when running the engine hard. Lrger more effecient coolers keep it at that temp. Extra air movement helps but not as much as you would think.

That's prototypes .

That fits without drilling , just a few silicone to stick in four points.

Easily removable , just to pull .

Fiberglass made.

An esthetic way on my opinion.

But surely less efficient than that Steve Wong shows.

Thanks for the compliment.
