Oil cooler help
I have a 1981 911 SC. It has a oil cooler in the middle center of the front. There is a fan in the trunk that blows over the cooler. I had the dreaded battery pan rusted out and had to have it replaced. I have a friend that runs a body shop but is inexperienced with Porsches but the labor is almost free. The problem is that we have finished the repair thanks to all the wonderful help of the boards. One of the pieces we replaced was the front where the hood(trunk) latch was. Now that we are at the reassembly time there is a fan that goes over the oil cooler ( dont worry pictures are following this discription) but there is no where for the fan to intake air from. We think that we are supposed to cut a hole in the front piece and put the fan intake thru that. But i wanted to confirm with the experts before i did anything stupid.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I hope those images help to understand what i am talking about. i tried to do a search on here for something similar but all the front oil coolers i found were in the wheel well. if you need more info or more pictures let me know thank you in advance for all your help. |

Not really an Oil Cooler
Hawk this is the front AC condenser, follow the lines that are attached. I know this because I removed my entire AC system.

Yes, blower for the front A/C condenser.
The air intake is supposed to be a rectangular hole above the front valence (behind the front bumper). Same size and location as the small intake for the fan unit. It pulls air from behind the bumper and blows it over the condenser under the car. You might see if you can find a car with A/C (midyear, SC, 84-89 Carrera) to see how it works. |

There should be a hole in the front facia, It may depend on the year. If its not there it shouldn't be to hard to cut one in.
This photo shows the stock intake for a '80 SC, its located behind the front bumper. ![]()

Yup, should be hole in the front fascia as in the pic. The rubber gasket on the front of the fan housing fits in there.

He can use the gasket on your fan.
Set it in place over the outlet (to the condenser) and mark where the inlet should be cut. Maybe cut a tad small first and go from there. Is there a piece of screening laying in the outlet hole in a couple pics? That doesn't look like condenser fins below there? |
