Strange noise from starter when cranking
I recently moved from San Diego to No VA (Purcellville) and this is my first real winter with the P-car so I'm getting use to new quirks and noises. The latest issue is a strange "grinding" sound coming from the starter whenever I start the car and it's REALLY cold (for example, this morning it was below 30 degrees). The car will crank after the second try, no problem, but I get the "grinding" whenever it's been sitting for a while in really cold weather. If the car is still warm from driving, then no problem, it cranks great.
So my question, is this typical old car in cold weather stuff or is the starter beginning to fail? I replaced the starter about 5 years ago, all has been well until about 1 month when we started to get cold mornings. Thanks guys. v/r Wayne C. 83 SC |
