I did think about mounting the projector off to the side but the clearance in the fender prevents this I was thinking about what Randy said about the crosseyed and I counterd with evil but the size of these projectors require it to be in the center the up side is these should have a superior pattern compared to the smaller projector.
|
I don't think the size of the projector would necessarily give it a different pattern. Regardless, I am paying attention to this thread... :)

I am waiting on parts right now and I got an early Christmas present this year that I could do without. I got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and went straight to injecting insulin this has been a wonderful experience becoming a pin cushion making lemonade out of lemons my cholesterol was low.
|
Damn, sorry to hear about that. Kinda crappy Christmas news...
As I understand it, looking after your circulation is pretty important. The insulin injections aren't so bad. After a while, that is. A few years ago I was diagnosed with MS. The only treatment is in the form of injectable meds, as well. I've no obvious symptoms, so that helps, I guess. I tell people that if I didn't know I had it, I wouldn't know I had it, if that makes sense. It's kind of an oversimplification, but you get the idea. Make use of the support groups in your area. Talking with others with the same condition is invaluable. Good luck. |
Thanks, when I get this under control it will be alot better right now my sugar is still really high but it is slowly coming down I am glad to hear you have your MS under control it's a wonder what modern medicine can do now days isn't it. More coming soon on the lights around tues.

I got the driving lights and got them mounted in the assembly, now I need to get the time to mount the projectors to the mounting plate. I am having trouble finding time to do this as I am in the process of moving to a new house (with a bigger shop) :D and figureing out how to deal with being diagnosed with diabetes and getting my blood sugar under control :( but I will figure it out. Now a pic. ;)

A pic to give you an idea what the finished look will be.

I've been following this project with great curiosity as well,at first glance those lights look somewhat futuristic. Can't wait to see the finished product !
Keep up the very informative post and best of luck with your recent health issues :) Cheers ! Phil |

Ok I have these things mounted tenatively and will disassemble and paint then reassemble and fix every thing with silicon. Tell me what you think of the 2 of them. Sorry they are blurry lighting is bad.

looks great. can't wait to see them on the car and how the beam pattern looks.
|
They look like something out of a science fiction movie, definitely will be a head turner.
Can't wait to see them installed and have your comments on the lighting performance ! Cheers ! Phil |
Now that you see the finished layout ideas on the color I should paint the inside we had some discussion that ranged from chrome to black what do you think now match the shroud or contrasting color ie the smoke chrome?

Still need to drill a hole for the driving lights wiring that will tap into the factory high beam wiring.

Gonna mount them on the car tomorrow to se how they look and see if they need adjustment for horizon then I will start to work on wiring.
|
I'd go with a silver (not chrome) paint on the inside of the VW bucket and black on the mounting plate you made.
|
Looking awesome. It might look very nice if you polished the aluminum backing on the side that faces the front. I agree chrome wouldn't be quite right. Once polished maybe coat it with clear to keep it that way.
|
Polished is out of the question but I could sand it to give it a satin finish. the silver and black scheme has possibilities I just like the smoke chrome or how about a grey hammered finish?
|
Grey hammertone might not be bad. Can you paint the chrome on the projector to match the driving light? I'd try it w/o first, but question how the chrome would look next to the hammertone.
|
So silver on the bucket the driving light is attached to and grey hammer finish on the mounting plate and I am not going to get paint anywhere near those projectors the shrouds can stay silver so when I silicon it it will blend well and provide some contrast. How does that sound? If it sucks then I will just sand it off and try again.

Hey Jerry, your lights are looking awesome! Can't wait to see the final product.

Thanks hope they perform as well as they look

Have you thought of any sort of "frosting" on the lenses to help hide the internals. I know various options have been discussed on the other HID threads, just wondering if you had any plans. |
Looking great I will love to see the final product..
|
I would consider frosting if I had anywhere around here to do it professionally that is not something I want to screw up.
|
I have clearance problems in the headlight bucket the projector is too deep so I will have to drill a hole in the bucket and mount the ballast outside under the fender. Let me know what you think! I need to move the driving light just a smidge to the right.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1292599571.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1292599620.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1292599666.jpg |
Yeah, just a smidge to the right. It looks like it's not level.
On another note, after seeing the light on the car, I have a different thought on painting. I would do the sides silver, (though they kinda do look grey, which is also good) and your aluminum plate at the back, black. It would tie in the black trim of the driving light quite nicely. And your trim rings body colour, of course. I think one of your biggest challenges will be aiming them. Looks like it might be a lot of pissing around... It's coming along pretty well - looks awesome already, even without the finishing paint. |
To the right is taken care of the sides are grey and will be silver and the trim rings will be body color.
|
My 2 ¢... Avoid black inside the headlight unit. Seeing the pictures in the earlier thread, the black seem to stand out too much. Any gray or silver metalic hue would look great. My thinking is that it already looks different, black just seemed to bring more emphasis inside the lens which, IMHO, it doesn't need.
Also, I love the European parking lamp look. That could be added on the outboard side of the projector on your back plate wired to the running light circut. My Z has it: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1292602603.jpg And European H4s do too. I think they are called "city lights": http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1246486327.jpg pic by sygyzy |
I agree on not painting the mounting plate black, if you're not going to paint the projector housing. It'll create too much contrast IMHO. I think the all silver or silver w/ grey hammertone is the way to go. Looks awesome so far. Are those the VW lenses? Have you looked into using the H1 lenses - I think they fit but not 100% sure.

Frosting lenses is easy and you can always start over. Plenty of products to do it with. Agree on the no black in there, it will just emphasize the projectors too much.
Are H1 lenses fluted?? I didn't think they were clear. If they aren't clear, you can't use them as they will screw up the pattern. Any frosting done must be kept clear of the path of the light in the pattern area. On mine there was a socket in the bucket for a city light bulb, but, that area was taken up by the lights I used in that area. Mine were a fog pattern, instead of a driving light pattern, as I used bi xenon lights and had hi and low beam HID. I have mused about tying the fog lights to the parking light circuit, but adding a resistor to dim and dull them a bit to a 'city light glow' level, then, also attaching them to a un-resisted circuit, either as a separate fog, or in conjunction with the low beams. |
I am using the VW lens and they are clear I am going to tie the driving lights into the high beam circuit they are halogen lights so they will help some.

Ahhh - I see that now. I'll see if I can skate by on a technicality... they're less fluted that H4's & 5's

Wow sweet work Gsmith
