Post CV's Rebuildable?

Can anyone tell me if CVs are rebuildable, or is it really more economical to buy new ones?

Thanks

John,

It depends entirely on the condition of the races ... the ball bearings can be purchased very inexpensively from any industrial bearing supply store. If the races are pitted/worn badly enough that you can feel ridges, or pits with a 'fingernail test' then just replace the whole CV-joint, Otherwise, you can repack them with a high-temperature moly grease and use them again with undamaged boots, or new boots if needed.

There are a couple of really great web pages about Lobro CV-joints with procedures and pictures below:

As always Warren, you are a wealth! I've stripped and cleaned my joints, they are definitely pitted or worn. I'm a bit short on dollars at the moment but it seems silly not to replace things whilst the car is off the road. It's just so expensive to change all four. If I repack the joints well, will they be fine for a few months?

Thanks as always

Not sure how much you want to spend but, you can buy reconditioned axles for under $190.00. Saves allot of work and hassle. It's the easy way out.

Thanks Adam, I remember following that thread a while ago. I don't think my pitting is quite as bad as yours, and after spending far too many Australian half-dollars, I'm going to give the original CV's another few months while I save.

Isolon, double your $190 and you'll get an idea of the cost to me. One of the problems of a floating dollar Aussie dollar

Thanks once again for your input
