67S on ebay!!!

not much effort in their attempt to sell what "looks" to be a very nice example.

Why the fuss over this one? There's been a red one up for the last couple of weeks or so (it's on it's 2nd go-round). The red one's iffier with its aftermarket steering wheel, wrong wheels since the Esses came with Fuchs, and that weird chrome air box, and it sure doesn't look restored, but you do get to see more of it.

The black one provides almost nothing. The VIN doesn't have an S and is 3,005 cars later than the red one - did they even make that many Esses the first year? And by the way, Porsche had electric sunroofs long before the 911 came along. It's a rare and desirable option, but 356s had them in the 50s - they weren't introduced with the 911S.

Hmmmm...according to the latest VIN listings of the early S registry, (12-06-01) this car ought to be in Hood River, Oregon...IF it's an "S", that is...meaning VIN# 308141S...dunno about VIN#308141, as listed in the ebay ad...

was there a 67 "S" soft window? I always wanted a 67 "S", but I think if I had an early car for touring around on weekends, I'd want a soft window targa. Did such a car exist?

Dave, I'm not sure about that. I do know the soft window was made in '68, but don't know about '67....Of course, in '68, all we got here was the 911L...not really an S. There were S's brought in though, by servicemen & others...so if you're hunting for one, I'd say '68 might be the most likely found...

I'm not sure I'm actually "hunting" for one just yet...I'm about a year away from graduation and have some other projects going on-my Volvo takes up the "antique restoration" time and the 912 takes up the "let's build the most fun per miles" time and money. But, if I came across an honest 67"S" soft window, I'd have to look pretty hard. It just seems like the perfect combination of rarity, fun to drive factor (HP and quasi-convertible) that would make for a keeper. I've always thought dark green or maybe silver with red leather...

My '66 has factory Sun Roof. So maybe by "first of its kind" , they mean , "first of its kind on an S".

Also what does "shows" like a show room car mean ?

Also I dind't know they had CD's in 67. But.. 911's are always ahead of their time !!!

They're also saying 40,000 miles which, if true adds a rarity factor. 26 bids on their first day isn't bad for an understated ad.
Be fun to watch where this goes. Wonder what their reserve is?

Dave,

I found a 67 S softwindow targa for sale on the collector car trader site (http://www.collectorcartraderonline.com). Its in Greensboro NC and sold by a local restoration facility.

There is a phone number listed in the S registry for the car with the same number...I wonder if it's worth a long distance call to Hood River to see if it's the same car? Anybody really serious on this '67 on ebay? I'd hate to make the call unless somebody was... I'd also like to know if '67 911 models and '67 S models could bear the SAME VIN, only one of them having "S" stamped after it???? Warren, do you know?

Paul, I checked on that after work last night. The VIN range for the S and the regular 911s used the same range - Porsche just stuck an S after the number when the car was an S. This means that no 911 and 911S models share the same number, so 308141 and 308141S are the same car. Odds are the person writing the ad left off the S. Not uncommon - a place on the web had the S written as a 5 in the VIN once because they couldn't make it out well. I e-mailed the place and he was like "Sheesh, it's a typo, what's the big deal? You're like the 5th person to ask about this!" I had to explain the significance to him, and recommend some Porsche books.

By the way, the red one didn't meet reserve, with a top bid of $6100. I was sorely tempted to pull the trigger, but I don't yet know how much getting the Rolls painted is going to run me (we found lots of problems under the paint!). Decided I'd play it safe...

Emanuel...and the S registry says this car was in Oregon in '01???? I'm still scratching my head. Surely, there couldn't be two cars with the same VIN....unless... I'll wait until after working hours end here...then make that call.

(later) Call to Hood River was made a lady answered. It was Hood River, but she never heard of the listed owner of the car, the street wasn't the same as listed in the registry's list, and she didn't have a clue what a 1967 911S was. So, dead end up here...still find the date thing funny, though...

67S

This car was originally (in 93) in Hood River....then was sold. The Registry will only update the owner listing if the new owner steps forward....or the seller reports who the new owner is.

The "original owner" of this car was Francis Ford Coppola (spelling?)...I saw the paperwork.

When the car was purchased by the current owner, it was Bahama Yellow....rumor has it that $30K was put into the restoration in the mid 90's, and it is an original black plate car.

The car was extremely solid...only rust was a few small bubbles in the front fender lower corner in front of the door....floors were very solid, as was the battery boxes, and horseshoe and front suspension bolt mounting area. The car appeared to have never been hit.

regards,
Eric
