AC Compressor repair

I want to remove the pulley from a Sanden 507. Can I remove them from the shaft with the ac system all charged up? There is damage on the pulleys that look like it was dropped before install. Makes all sorts of noise, works fine but is irritating. Any secrets to pulling the compressor clutch to get at the pulleys? Easy/pain in butt/don't bother?
