Speed/Reference Sensor Pin-Out & Details
I don't suppose if anyone knows for sure whether or not the speed/reference sensors will work without the shielding being connected to the sensor itself? I suppose it depends on whether there is an IC amplifier in the sensor body (like most 3-Pin Hall effect sensors) or if only two wires are actually required for the sensor to operate and the shielding is just grounded.
I've thrown too much money at this car but I do have a sensor that has the shielding completely disconnected from the sensor. I'd be heart broken to get a $150 sensor and still have this no-start issue.

I don't know exactly what you mean by the shielding. If you're talking about the black insulation around the wire, isn't that kind of a electrical hazard if that's missing?
The main reason for this post is that you can buy the BMW equivalent sensors that are about half-price. They work like a champ! I'll try to find the part number unless somebody gets to it before me.

Am seeing this late at nite so I can't check my speed & ref sensor connector if it has 2 or 3 pins, but the DME connector diagram indicates 3 wires (2 for signal and a braided shield) for each. If your sensors are old to the point where the insulation became brittle and fell off, and your shield detached, I am afraid it may be time. (see diag. below)
+1 on what Poor-sche Lover said regarding the BMW part (12-14-1-708-619-M14). ![]()

For future reference, they are not hall effect devices. They are variable reluctance, If I'm not mistaken it is only the shielding that is grounded and the sensors themselves do not require a "third wire" for anything but shielding.
