First Real Street Race

(if the Stoplight Grand Pix annoys you, please move on)

I had my first real street race tonight, against a kid in a Cobra Mustang. I ate him for lunch - no question about it. No real drama, no tire squealing (for me anyway) just made sure I had 1st engaged well, spooled up, and then did my 1-2 shift carefully as I could, then nailed it. Poor kid didn't know what hit him. I put about 6 car lengths between us within a big city block. Lather, rinse, repeat at the next one. I was at my destination, and he followed me in, with this wide-eyed, exasperated look: "What is *IN* that thing? I blow away Carreras all the time, and I've never had one wax me like that!" I tried to tell him the car was stock, but I couldn't hold a straight face

i don't know.........i used to own a mustang cobra. i woulda taken you on.

when i owned it, i used to run with corvettes all the time. they would beat me, primarily off the line, but other than the jump at the line, i would keep up with them.

i have a cobra mustang story too
i was on the freeway cruising at about 70 when this red mustang comes flying up on me.......i slow to 60 to see what he was planning, he made the let's slow down than race signal, i dropped to 50 in 3rd and he tried to get me to slow down more...
i did a "fake launch" (i hesitated so i could pass him) he takes off with me beside him...we were fairly close until he had to shift, he also ran out of gear at 120 and i simply pulled away
we got off the freeway and talked, he said his cobra ran low 12's in the quarter and had changed the rear end gears which is why he ran out of leg. he also pointed out that if i was to slow down to 30-40 he would've beaten me.............
my reply was simple "i knew what game i could win, which is why i didn't slow to 40 "
he seemed like a good kid.........but it was still a mustang.

please note the freeway was completely empty as it was 5 in the morning

When kids in Mustangs GTs pull up alongside me and "ask" to race, I look at them with a completely deadpan face, and then openly laugh at them.

I'm an arrogant son of a bitch sometimes. But then, I bought a Porsche, didn't I?

i didn't have a GT. i had removed 1 cat on both sides of the dual exhaust. i had a pretty free-breathing car.

beyond 130 MPH, i may have been lost by a later model carrera. but up to that point, i don't think i would have had any problems keeping up with a porsche.

i've caught myself blatantly laughing at kids a few times, which makes me realize that more than my taste in cars has grown up

Kinda have the same story as widebody...........
But my car was a seafoam green 63 chevyII with a 5.7L 2-speed (powerglide auto & 3.08:1 rear gear.
I-90 west bound from the west lake samamish on ramp a$$ in a new 80 SC decided to play don't let me merge game.
Well, by the time he "finaly" caught up ( I guess SC's don't have any real pull from 80mph up or top end) I was back to 55mph and getting ready to exit to Bellevue Way and he was asking what I had in the car. Just a stock 350 with a 327 375HP cam and a car that weighs the same or less than his.
Moral of the story: Don't mess with cars that don't weigh much with big motors in them. And a high school kid on a friday night...

I always chuckle when I see the Porsche vs. Mustang posts because I have one of each.

It would take a LOT to get my 911T any faster than my 93 5.0 (highway patrol stock) at anything less than freeway speeds... However I surprised myself by beating the pants off my friend's 67 Mustang Fastback (brutally fast) from a running start on the freeway. I guess it's power to weight, because my 140 HP T isn't exactly a racecar...

Surprised the heck out of me.

My friend had a 1994 Cobra, which I beat in my stock Carrera 4 times in a row. He isn't a bad driver but my car was faster than his. and his car had a full Mach exhaust w/headers and a few other little goodies. On a secluded street we raced from a launch, I took him 2 car lengths and kept pulling away. He tried telling me that he had trouble launching properly so we raced again, this time wiyh a rolling start. I passed him again. Ditto for the third race, and the last race was at highway speeds, which was effortless. This guy just bought an SC.

I've never had trouble with any mustangs. I've had some hang in there, but that was me f'ing around. Like just keeping pace exactly then trying to pull away as I got to my sweet spot.

This includes Saleen mustangs. It's power to weight ratio. 315 HP in a Camaro is just enough to keep it even with my Porsche, or that's my experiences so far!
