Cool!
I have had my 85 911 for a few months now and have most of the little stuff fixed. Only things left....interior lights do not come on when door is opened but work when you turn them on, (I know how the switch works) clock only works when car is driving then for about 3 hours after it is turned off, speed control will not hold the speed when speed is set. All strange things but I will fix them. Nick

Nick,
It does sound like you're down to the little stuff - that's a nice place to be. On my car, the interior lights did not come on simply because of a small amount of corrosion on the switch. The switch comes out really easily, but you have to disconnect the battery first, as there is power to the wires, and once the switch is loose, it's easy to ground against its mounting hole. Now get out there and drive it and enjoy it.

Congratulations on getting a lot of the little stuff out of the way.
I'm in the same boat. I've had my 1985 targa for a few months and I have a lot of little things to fix, but I haven't even started tackling them. Your post may be the kick in the pants I need to start the work. In the meantime, I'm having a blast driving the car. Lawrence Last edited by Swoboda; 12-12-2010 at 02:57 PM.. |

The door switches are ground wires. No need to disconnect the battery. Clean the switch with a small wire brush. The rubber covers dry out and sometimes prevent the switch from popping out all the way to make the ground..

Thank you! So far I have fixed the driver door. It did not shut tight. Took the door apart as per Pelican article sprayed lube everywhere, door fixed. . Then the air conditioner had loose schrader valves. Replaced now works fine. Next new front hood lifts. (What a pain!) last, leather repair to passenger seat ($85.00 at local shop in San Diego area) Cool! I did go on a 100 mile trip up to San Isabel on Sunday to buy a pie. Could have gone to super market but that is only 2 miles away!!!! Nick I love this car!

As I recall with the clock, electricity is used to wind up the clock and then it runs for awhile and then is again rewound. The fact that it runs for a few hours after the car is off and then runs down makes me think that you no longer have constant power to the clock. Easy to find that out. Just pull the clock and check to see if the power wire to it is how when the ignition is turned off.

Rot 911, it is a quartz clock and it does keep perfect time while running, then after several hours it stops. I did check with the car off with my meter over 12 V at the clock so it is a Porsche strange problem! I think I need to get my clock cleaned! Nick

there was a thread from a few months back that had a Pelican who works exclusively on the clocks.
But it could just be "dirty"....try hosing it down liberally with electrical contact spray? That's about the extent of my electrical ability....clean it or replace it. I cleaned up my door switches and replaced the rubber coverings....easy, cheap and successful.
