Directional Signals Inop

Directional signals inop. Emergency flasher works and lights light up. Is there a flasher relay somewhere?

Turn signal relay is located behind the instrument panel on the drivers side. You can access it through the front luggage compartment... or by pulling out the fuel/oil level gauge and the oil pressure/oil temp gauge from the interior side...if you have small hands and some dexterity :) Its a tall, square, black case relay.

Typically the flasher can works the e flashers and turns signals. I would suspect the stalk connections or it could be worn like the high beam switch that goes easily.

I agree with Joe Bob. It could be something other than the flasher relay for sure. Turn signal switch itself would be a likely culprit. Or poor ground connection somewhere.

Agree with both posts as to probable cause. Easiest check, IMO, is to swap out the relay with a known good one. If that doesn't fix the problem, follow up on grounds then the switch on the stalk.

BTW, the easiest access to the relay is through the gauge hole as mentioned. However, I'm not sure if the 70 still has the thumb screw clamps holding the gauges from the back--I know 69 does. If your gauges are held by clamps, you will need to go in from the trunk.

First, thanx to all who replied. I am a neophite - what is a stalk - is that the steering column?

Can the relay be checked on the bench??

The stalk is the lever that actuates the turn signals. The internal connections wear out and/or get gummy. Sometimes cleaning them with electrical solvent works. Other times they are scored and need replacement.

Usually the high low beam goes first. It's not a hard fix and the part is available thru Pelican.

Is there anyway the relay can be tested on the bench? I.e., remove the relay, apply 12V to one of the pins and check the other pins?
