I drive it/them in the rain. Worse, at the moment the '69 is left out in the rain because I have nowhere to put it (sorry
). At least it is summer here. When it is "done" I will try not to drive the '69 in really bad weather and will certainly store it inside. The '75 will become the "everyday" car and be subjected to lots of bad weather. So 'fess up - how many garage queens? How many daily drivers where it rains?

I have chased way too much rust to drive in the rain. I don't even wash it unless it is warm enough out for it to dry!

Even if you drive only in fair weather, you still have to wash/wax,clean her bottom, etc. Therefore, not a fair poll. Garage queens take as much, if not more, work as daily drivers. It all depends, I guess, on what floats your boat, turns your crank.

My poor car lived outside for 22 years untill I adopted her. I tried to get my wife let me park her in the living room of the new house ( 6' wide sliding glass door), but she said no!
So after all those years outside, a little rain won't hurt. |

Toblu was just painted 6 months ago. I live in the bay area where it has been raining for the past month and a half. Unfortunately, I have no garage. So it sits with a car cover and a plastic tarp wrapped around it. Amazingly so, when I take the tarp and the cover off, it is ALMOST dry. It still sucks not to have a garage. There so many things that I can't do until the sun comes out. I have been waiting for over a month to change the clutch in my Saab spg. I have driven the Porsche twice in a month-about 10 miles in all. Whoopy!!!

i am with dhaines on this. hadn't had to chase any rust, but looking for the right car for 11 months makes me want to not chase any at all. i bet i don't use more than 2-3 gallons of water washing it just to make sure. a local body shop that does a lot of pcar work says that many people flood their cars with water and don't properly dry their cars. just asking for trouble...

.Seriously, I was just trying to make the options funny. From what I know, your car fits into the "beautiful pampered garage queen" category. If I had a car I never drove in the rain, I would spend forever washing and waxing and polishing and cleaning and nourishing and..... In fact, the holidays gave me the time to get the 69T looking the best it has ever looked in my possession. Then it rained... Oh well, I can do it again. Less driving in the winter rain here in the Puget Sound area but I do still drive the targa a couple times a week. The car has had the good fortunate of being garaged consistently for at least the past 10 years.
This morning I drove up to Marysville WA (about 70 miles on the always exciting I-5) for a BMW MC meeting (I hab a code and da bike wide wouldn't halp it). Pretty wet ride back home. Probably because of the air flow around the car when its moving, but the targa top doesn't leak then. If it is parked in a steady rain, it leaks at the top of the vent windows |

Bought it last December and drove it in 5 degree weather with clear skies and clear roads. Still do not store it, and when the weather is clear, out she comes! Garage queen yes [i.e. have not washed it yet, after one year of ownership], daily driver [yes, when it's nice], do I check dopler radar before I go out? ...[yes]

Cars that I don't care about (ie every car except the 911 ) get pitted paint from acid rain. 911 must be stored indoors where I'm at (NYC).

Someday I hope to be able to drive in the rain. With the seams splitting off of the Targa top, looks like I will stay fair weather for a bit longer. Restoration of the top comes right after I exorcize the wiring deamons!
For now and for a long time it will be in the garage.

Yep, a car wash can last a long time here in Arizona. However, you just have to experience a monsoonal dust storm once to understand that there is a down side to living in a desert climate.
Also, a California Car Duster comes in handy here. Your car is more likely to need dusting than washing. |

I too, am in the Bay Area and have driven my Targa precious little in the past 6 weeks. Worse, its been cold (OK, not COLD, COLD but cold enough that I've had to put the top on).
I wash AND dust. The first time my wife saw me with the duster she damn near died laughing - now she just rolls her eyes.

They did not put the 917's in the garage when it rained at Le Mans. I don't put my 911 away either when it is rains. You only live once. Go have some fun.

Rain, snow, or sunshine, I use a 911. Unless I had something totally immaculate, or rare, I feel life is too short not to use it. Hence, I'd go for something usable and not the above so I can happily drive around in a 911 everyday. I'd love a garage queen as well, but I'm not at that stage in life, yet. So, I'll settle for the daily driver 911 and enjoy it everyday, which I really do.

The POs kept the car really clean and I purchased her as the family 3rd car. She is garaged. When rain comes, I just use one of the other cars.
But when the weather is fair.....I'm ready to roll

Hell... did someone say rain.
I drive my 87 cab in Typhoons in Hong Kong. Now that's rain. As long as I go fast...no leaks...park it and it needs the cover or I need a wetsuit to get back in! Cheers Mark |

My Targa was my daily driver (and only car) for three years.
I've driven it in everything. Those 255 wide tires sure suck in the snow. It's like trying to steer a garbage can on banana peels in a Crysco factory. Thank god I'll never have to do that again. My car leaks like mad. I've tried everything. I now believe the only solution is to get a garage. But yes, I have driven in rain, sleet and snow. Luckily in Idaho they don't use salt on the roads, they use sand. Although it is scary as hell to ride a crotch rocket in April (don''t ask), you don't have to worry about the salt corrosion. I put tarp over the roof and put a car cover over that and hope for the best.
