Entry for mice?

Hello all,

My 1982 911 SC lives down a dirt road in the middle of nowhere, outside Tucson. Recently I've discovered that our little desert mice can make their way into the cabin and trunk to build nests. Wondering if anyone has any ideas of the various ways they might be gaining entry.

Thanks . . . !

Jonathan

Mice love machinery. I don't think you'll be able to keep them out. The opportunistic little bastards spend most of their lives figuring out how to get into places you don't want them to be. I say, let them in and then kill them.

Put a mouse killing poison block in those areas.......the green ones work best.

I have them zip tied in all my vehicle engine compartments too, as the mice like a warm engine to sleep near after you park the vehicle.

I do use snap traps. I don't like the Warfarin-based poison, as it's both slow-acting on the poor mouse, and persistent, so anything that grabs the sick mouse out here (owls, coyotes, bobcats) ingests the poison as well.

Nice thing about a snap trap is that the mouse's last thought is a happy one: "Hey - who left this nice piece of chee . . ."

I'll continue to look for openings, but suspect I'll also need to leave traps in the car whenever it's parked.

When you park, pull your heater levers up. If you don't they will stay in the open position underneath the car. From there, mice can get into your heat exchangers and fan area or go the other direction and into your cabin. They get into the trunk area as well but I'm not sure where.

Carbag - Protective jackets for your car or motorcycle

Saturday 78 and sunny, still a lot of sand on the roads but... Unzipped car bag, removed all the dryer sheets, disconnect charger, put the mats back in, fired her up and rolled her out. Took the car bag out to the lawn to roll it back up for storage, and found a sizable pile(dustpan full) of acorns and turds under the car bag directly in the center of where my car was parked. F^@& Y*^ MICE! CAR BAG FTW!

Apparently mice can deform their skeleton, even their skull, to enable them to get through tiny holes- FYI

Yes, they are flexible little things.

Thanks for the tip about the heater levers - I wouldn't have thought of that.

I've had a horrible mouse problem with my 71 911 for several years. Moth balls worked well, but smelled horrible and were probably toxic to me and my family. Dryer sheets work, but only last a few days thus totally defeating the point of getting mice in the car because it's sometimes a couple of weeks in between drives.

I've been trying a product called "Fresh Cab" for about a month and (knock on wood) so far so good. I've left it parked for well over a week and no little critters that I can find.

I second opening of the heater control when parked to keep them out of the vent/heat system.

Put some cat poop in a pie tin and park over it or toss 2 of them in your garage...If the little mouse sells cat poop/pee they will leave the area. Cat and mouse game, seems to work for guys up here.

mice can jump - some species of mice in the desert are known as "jumping mice" and can really jump

screen off all holes, even small ones

some put peppermint oil in a baby food jar with cotton in it and deploy that strategically

besides the problems with poison noted above, the mice might die in your car where you cannot get to it - it will stink for years

Our desert mice must be tough - a dozen moth balls in the trunk didn't prevent one from building a nest in there while we were out of town. I suspect they'd look on peppermint oil as cologne!

Heater levers are up now - looking for more holes.

Yeapers... Since they dont have collar bone, an adult mouse can go through a 1/4 inch hole

Can a mouse fit thru a hole the size of a biro? | kgb answers

I've had some mice problems in the past, fortunately not at the moment. Try this: Get the glue traps, they walk in and get stuck. Place them right at the inner edge of the four tires, underneath the car. I've found them caught there. Pick up the trap and toss it.

An exterminator told me that, if you put out several baited traps with out setting the for several days, that when you set the traps, you'll catch every one.

I'd second the 'wrap it in plastic' philosophy of the car bag combined with lots of traps around the car.

Of course the engineer in me suggests going to a farm supply store, getting an electric fence module. Then build an electric fence around the car with chicken wire. Teach those little furballs a lesson.

Just remember to unplug it before you touch the fence, those things hurt. Oh, and power may be an issue if it truly is 'middle of nowhere.'
