First post / New member 1979 911sc

Hello all

I am proud to say that I am now a Porsche 911 owner !!!

My wife ( God love her ) bought me this car from a very good friend of hers. She was the original owner of this 911 SC that was purchased in November 1978. The car had spent a better part of the last 5 years under either a carport or a tarp, but was a daily driver for the owner the first 25 years and from what I can tell was well cared for during the early years of its life.

I have had the car for a month now, and have put approx 500 miles on the car, I can't be exact because the OD is broken. I am now starting the long process of giving my SC the TLC she needs and deserves.

The list so far :

Change fluids
Oil leaks - too many right now to list
High beam switch - The high beams are always on unless I am using the turn signal.
Cruise control switch doesn't set the speed.
Gauges - O.D. and the Clock need to be fixed
Tires - The only matching set are on the front and they are old and cracking.
Lights - Need to go around and in the whole car and check or replace all lights.
All rubber mounts / bushings - Sure they all need it
Pop-off valve
Shift kit and of repace the bushings right now it seems the throws are too slopy and far apart for my liking
This is just a start to a long journey and I am looking forward to the process more so than the product.

Any helpfull tips and suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Welcome to Pelican.
Nice car (nice wife too)
Looks like you've got some good reading material to go with it.
A little bit of searching will turn up some great threads on all the repairs you've listed.
Happy motoring.

Welcome, Jimmy -- Nice car!

You have a good set of reference books; most answers will be in one of them. This forum will help you fill in all of the "what else should I do as long as I'm in there?" and "how the #$%^ do I remove this ____ part without breaking something expensive?" questions.

And good karma on you for including pics in your very first post! Maybe update your sig to let folks know (generally) where you are. Lots of people here are happy to lend an extra pair of helping hands and infrequently-used but must-use tools, in addition to their expertise and been-there/done-that advice.

Not to mention a big hoooo-raaaaaahh for a terrific wife -- you're doubly blessed, IMHO. But remember XMAS is just around the corner, and maybe Santa will leave a little something extra for such a thoughtful spouse (BTDT - jewelry doesn't take up much room in a stocking!).

Do a search on this forum. There is an easy fix for your high beams. No new parts required.

And welcome aboard!

I'll join the others to wish you a warm welcome! Your car looks great and is in much better condition that many of ours were on first purchase as your list of "to do's" reflects. Let me add to Dale's post about your location--it's a tremendous help for finding close-by friends and also for buying and selling on the parts board (yes, you'll be there often!) You may also wish to add your car's year and model/make in the signature line that is automatically shown with every post, saving you the trouble of retyping the information every time you have a question.

Welcome, and enjoy the ride with the rest of us!

Welcome Jimmy, you have all the right books and manuals to get her in top condition! Get those fluids changed (Brad Penn and Kendall off course... ...), check out the brake lines and run her!

I was just thinking....I can't remember the last time I saw "regular" lower valve covers on Pelican!

Me neither

Welcome to the forum JimmyVee,

You have the right books to start with, they'll be very helpful in getting your car sorted out.

The odometer can be fixed by North Hollywood Speedometer. Have them calibrate your speedo while they fix the odo - Your 911 will probably register a speed circa 10% faster than what you are driving.

North Hollywood Speedometer and Clock Company. Serving your gauge needs since 1955. VDO, Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen, Veigel, Veglia

Buy a working used clock.

Replace the shifter bushings first before adding a short shift kit. The longer throw is easier on your synchros. Do some research if you do buy a shifter/shifter kit with a bias towards how hard they beat on the transmission parts.

If you don't have a pop off valve you may not have the updated chain tensioners either. That should go on your list of durability upgrades.
