Key switch locking issue

The ignition portion of the key switch on my 1971 911T failed and we rewired a new start switch, run switch, etc. The key switch appeared to be serving it's other purpose: Locking the steering wheel.

Yesterday I was setting the position of the steering wheel and found to my surprise that I could turn the wheel with the key on what would normally have been the OFF position. The through that went through my head was "Would this thing fail in the LOCK position with the key in the RUN position while I'm flying down the freeway?"

Is there a way to check the operation of the steering wheel LOCK mechanism without disassembling the entire steering column?

Any ideas on how to test this?

Thank you.

On all of the cars I've tired the wheel doesn't lock until you remove the key.

+1. That is the design of the system on all cars to prevent just the thing you fear.

Even after pulling the key, they sometimes need a wiggle to lock.
