My apologies, I don't know why I was thinking the instructions were specific to a SWB especially when the photos clearly show the fuse panel on the fender wall. I corrected my post and you are right, I can not expect your instructions to aid me in my DIY retrofit pre-1974.

I can also more clearly state the context of my statement. I was frustrated that it took me so long to do what I thought should have been a simple (and recommended) upgrade by many here on Pelican and here locally. In that frustration what I really wanted was a diagram illustrating the system flow so I could do my DIY install and power my H4 headlights safely and effectively.

No worries, thanks.SmileWavy Just want to be clear about the product and expectations.

The reality is that I want the product to be a very nice fit to the car, not a universal fit that does not work correctly for anything. I came out with the '74 to '89 version first, and they sell so well that I am just keeping up with the orders (especially from Pelican purchases) :)

So, I have not had time or desire yet to come out with the early versions, which will probably be one version of hardware but at least 3, maybe 4 versions of instructions to make a no-hassle install. I do respond to emails to lend a hand to those wanting to adapt the current version to early cars - when they ask nicely. ;)

Hey!

I used the relay kit from our vendor today, and Connected it properly. When I switch on the low beam, the wire that is Connected With the former wire from the fuse Box started to melt!! The high beam worked Ok. Any ideas why this happened?

regards
Fred Michel

How about a picture of your installation?

I installed this kit in my 87 Carreras along with H4s. It was a snap. Total install time maybe an hour. It works great.

Is it possible that your wiring is not stock?
Can you post a picture of what you have?

Meh. I have to think my '87 and your '88 would have the same original wiring from the factory. I think yours is not stock.

I installed the kit in my 1984 several months ago. The instructions were clear and the kit works fine.

Likewise on my 86, from what I recall, I think the pictures are flipped from the way that you actually look at the fusebox. Took about a half hour start to finish.

no problems with my installation

I had a question about the instillation and Jwest answered my email the next day. Took about 30 min once I started.

I just purchased this kit last month and did notice what I believe to be one error in the installation instructions. Step 6 states:
6) Position the 2 yellow and 2 white wires from the relay behind the fuse panel.
Perhaps an earlier version of this kit used 2 yellow and 2 white wires, but the current kit (and photos in the instructions) use 1 yellow, 1 white, 1 blue and 1 green wire - which is a great idea to avoid confusion, but Step 6 should be updated to reflect this. E.g.;
6) Position the yellow, white, green and blue wires from the relay behind the fuse panel.

Thanks for noticing this, I will make the change today. You can download the instructions from my site, so anyone wanting a good version for your records can get it tomorrow.

I adapted this kit for the H4s on my SWB. Simple if you understand wiring...

Driven97 10-21-2014 07:23 AM

Dropped this kit in my car two weeks ago as I was planning on a road trip and wanted some peace of mind.

Did a minor herp derp and did not reconnect the lower wires with the relay wires, but that was a misread of the instructions - total user error that I figured out pretty quickly.

I was pleasantly surprised that my otherwise original sealed H4 headlights were quite a bit brighter. I had been researching upgrade options for those, but turns out I don't think I need them anymore. So in a weird way this kit saved me money. Neat.

Took me about 40 minutes, 15 of them was looking for my misplaced wire stripper.

Thanks for the great product.

Its easier if you replace the original fuses with 3A to protect the low current drives from the headlight switch, and use fused relays with bigger fuses to protect each filament.
As the 4 original fused lines are now only powering the relay coils, you can actually just use 2 fuse positions (3A) and save the other 2 for something else. The 4 wires going to the filaments now come from the relays, not the fuses, and are long enough without extending.

Also, if you power the relays with 4 wires from the battery(rather than 1 or 2 and jumpers), no wire ever passes current for more than 1 filament, which is safer.

Another '88 here. Instructions were very clear and correct for the car, installation was a breeze, works perfectly.

steve84 10-21-2014 02:48 PM

This relay was the first upgrade that I made on my 1984. I thought the instructions were clear and I was able to complete the install in a reasonable amount of time. I thought that the most difficult part was threading the wires behind the fuse block.

+1 I installed a kit in my 86 in less than 1 hour
then bought 2 second kit for the 73
