Where to get parts in Canada.

Hello. I have been around the forum for a few months now. Just as I got my first Porsche. A 1987 911 Targa Carrera.

I made an parts order through our host last week and received my package yesterday. This is where everything goes wrong....UPS shipped it & it looks like it has been to he11 & back. I have damaged parts & now need to make a claim. Most of the damage came from someone in the Pelicanparts shipping dept packing up my front & rear rotors with my tune up parts (plugs, coil, cap, rotor) & filters (oil, fuel). Lets just say the rotors were not very kind to the other parts during their journey.

I would like to ask any other Canadians here if there is a reputable company in Canada to get parts from. Thank You very much in advance & wish me luck with my current problem. Which I am told could take about 3 weeks to remedy.

Cheers

Car parts In Canada

Most of the stuff you bought is available through CAR QUEST stores.
Usually gets to you the same day or the day after......

I got my fr & rear rotors , oil filters, gas filters, distributor cap etc...... from them.

I live in Canada. Have ordered many times from Pelican. Have them ship USPS (not UPS). I've never had a problem.

I use Pelican for most of the stuff I get. As was posted by someone else, request delivery using USPS. Then the customs fees are much less or non-existent, and even sometimes you don't have to pay GST.

Maybe when getting some heavy things like rotors and other more fragile stuff, perhaps order them separately? Or maybe request separate packaging? It really shouldn't be an issue, but sometimes things like that happen. Sometimes one has to think of these things on their own and take precautions...

I have purchased a couple things through the local Porsche dealer, but they don't stock anything and shipping times in one of the cases was actually longer than waiting for the same part from Pelican. When they didn't make their promised ship date, I got pissed off and ordered from Pelican. It got here two days before the one from the dealer.

I have also used the US Postal Service with no problems. UPS will charge you brokerage fees even though there is no duty. Pelican is one of the few US companies that uses the USPS.

i've had good results with autopartsway dot com and they have almost everything you need. autopartsonline is horrible to deal with so i wouldn't recommend. it would be great if pelican had a canadian distributor because we're getting killed on taxes, shipping, duties etc.

Yes, we certainly are taking it up the tailpipe on shipping. On the other hand we would have to pay the same tax (GST and perhaps PST) regardless of where it comes from (actually sometimes not with USPS and Canada Post), and there aren't any duties on automotive parts.

But I also feel it's right to support the host of this forum from which I have learned much information that is worth FAR more to me than a couple bucks saved on shipping some parts.

I would just like, to add that Pelicanparts is being very helpful in resolving the issue & is very apologetic. I am hoping this all works out well. It's just not a very good first experience with a company that seems to be very well liked.
I would also like to point out that UPS had a big hand in parts being damaged.

Cheers

Hi everyone. Stuff gets damaged from time to time, regardless of where it's going. A packaged shipped 5 miles away can get trashed - it's just a fact of having to deal with the shipping companies. Shipping Internationally complicates things because you cannot divide the shipment into multiple packages without doubling the price of the shipping. On top of that, then you have two packages to import through customs, etc. So, International packages generally have to have extra handling and care, which we do provide.

We're working on getting this fixed for targa871 right now.

As for UPS, we have a pop-up message in our shopping cart, and also in our shipping page, specifically warning against using them (we have to continue to offer the option because people in the end want to make their own choices).

USPS has always worked for me quite well with Pelican
As a side note, the UPS 'brokerage fee' is included in the 2-3 day air option. A few times, I've found that the UPS Ground + brokerage fee is actually higher than just going via air.

'sorry 'bout that. I meant to say brokerage fees (they duties i paid where for importing a whole car). UPS and FedEx are huge and sometimes have cost me 1/2 as much as the part itself. USPS is the way to go but I believe their tracking numbers are useless once they leave the country.

Again it would be wonderful if PP had a distributor/importer in Canada to get around these brokerage/handling fees if at all possible.

Hi Wayne,

Interesting to see I got your attention. Pleasure to meet you.
Just to inform you. I did not order on-line. I called in my order. It was never mentioned to me not to use UPS & I thought that a company with such a good reputation would know not to ship the rotors with other parts, or at least inform me that the rotors would be packaged together with the other items. I would have been OK with 2 packages. I guess one should never assume.
A little more help from the order desk would be nice, especially when dealing with a new customer. You obviously know where the problems lie & how to avoid them.
A little information goes a long way. I look forward to ordering from Pelican parts in the future & will keep this new (to me) information about shipping & packaging close at hand.

Cheers.

I've oredered a fair bit from Pelican, shipping USPS always ,the parts have always arrived undamaged. Usually takes 10 days to get, and if there are ever any problems with anything (fitment or quality) , they are excellent to deal with. To me , the service they provide is worth the extra shipping time it takes!

Just like you, I'm about an hour drive from the border. I use Pelican and have it ship to a UPS store on the US side.

I'm waiting for a Pelican order right now. I've ordered several times either online or phone orders. They can get parts that aren't on their website. All you have to do is ask.
Jason is very knowledgeable with cars of your vintage.
I had an issue only once and it was handled by Judy with one quick phone call.
This part is the most important. Never never never use UPS. The U.S. Postal service is the only way to go when getting parts from the States.

If you need body parts, nrw sheet metal, fenders, floors etc. they are now being made in Guelph Ontario by Design Restorations.
New owner bought the business and moved north.

Give them a call, very nice to deal with.
Just bought a few panels from them for my 911.

NO DUTY!!!!!
