Ownership costs for 996?

I'm thinking of buying a 2000-03 911 when I get my next car.

Can any of you give me an idea of the cost of ownership if this were my daily driver? I'm looking for anyone's advice who has owned this model for a while and what their feedback is on the mechanical reliability and if they can put their finger on the general operating cost on a yearly average. (not including purchase price or insurance)

Is this a reliable DD?

Can I still do some of my own work on it? I currently do most of the work on my 88.

A year and a half ago I bought a 2005 996 C4S with 13,xxx miles on the clock.

Now I'm up to 25K miles and drive the car almost everyday,rain or shine. Only major expense was a small RMS leak which I had fixed along with the clutch as a "while you are in there " thing.

Other than that...gas and oil changes, car runs great. Comfortable,solid and fast...great for a DD.

When there is a rms leak the disk can get oiled. Most of the expense for a clutch repair is the labor to get there and this labor is already done replacing the rms.

Oh, ok - I read it the other way around. Had the leak fixed while you were in there to do the clutch!

I own a 2000 996, as well as my 1984 Carrera. The 996 was bought about 4 1/2 years ago and had 37,000 miles on it then. It's been my daily driver since then and now has over 115,000 miles on it. I can say that (after having owned a Honda, Mitsubishi, Ford, and Chevy - all of which were very reliable), this car has been the most trouble free of all. I'm still on the original clutch, the engine has never leaked, and still has its original RMS and IMS. However, it's due for a clutch job in a few weeks, so while I'm in there, I'm going to replace the IMS bearing with the LN Engineering upgrade, along with a new RMS. I replaced the Air/Oil separator a few months back and did it myself to save a ton of labor cost. It's an inexpensive part but is a ***** to get to, so plan to spend a weekend doing the job.

The normal DIY jobs are super easy. I've never worked on a car that allows easier brake pad and disk changes, and the oil change is stupid-easy.

The 996 is a heck of a good daily driver and one I've never regretted buying.

Operating costs are minimal, considering the reliability I've encountered. Gas mileage averages about 25mpg.

My advice would be to purchase a 2002 or later model. Better engine, various improvements made, and it will have the updated front end.

Thanks for all the info gents. My biggest problem will the be wait. Not ready to buy yet.

25 MPG is very good IMO, considering 300HP on call. I get that in my WRX, and that's only a 2L turbo.

Need some definitions however, I'm not familiar with these contractions:

RMS is Rear Main Seal
IMS is Intermediate Shaft (Seal)

You REALLY need to make yourself aware of these issues so I suggest researching the two terms and reading up on them. I agree with the previous poster that said '02 or newer. They had better oiling (higher pump output) than the '99-01 engines.
The LN Engineering IMS upgrade is a very worthwhile upgrade as you will, no doubt, learn. You can also go to the LN engineering website and read about oil and the bearing there.
Incase you are thinking Boxster, Cayman, 996 or 997...you can't get away from the IMS issue unless you get a redesigned late '09 engine.
