Hey guys,
I adjusted my valves a few months ago, and have always done them "stone cold", but with the (garage) ambient temperature between say 65 and 75 degrees (F). I don't plan on re-adjusting them until next fall or so, but have always wondered if it would be too cold to do an accurate job with the ambient below 40 degrees (F)? It is not likely that I would ever work on the car when the temp is that low, but I am curious anyhow! |

yeah, it wouldn't be good. your fingers would freeze to the bone. i wouldn't be concerned with doing the adjustment though.

I adjusted mine back in October when the temp was 5-10C or just above freezeing and the concensus I got was that it would be OK. It went fine and a space heater keep my fingers warm.

I may have the coldest garage on The Board (another reason my engine project is taking so long), and I can verify John's assertion about cold fingers. But no, it is not going to negatively affect the valve clearance. Truthfully, we are so used to cool temps here that I'd be wary of adjusting valves in a garage in Phoenix. It would feel WAY too warm to me.

Ok when I did my valves the other day it was below 0 celsius so around 35F. (?)
I don't have a heater in my little garage so "yes my fingers were cold, but the car has to be worked on !" ![]() Quote:

Don't worry Eric, the "warm front" (rain) is coming in this weekend.

I swapped out my hood shocks for heavy duty ones the other day at 20 oF. It was great - blood flows lots slower at that temp. The only problem was when the magnalite froze to my tongue.

Thanks for all the input guys! Those of you doing valve jobs when it's that cold out are definitely troopers! Oh, and Argo, I know how you feel about the hood shocks. I just replaced mine last week. Why can't they make the driver's side as easy as the passenger's side?
