02 Sensor

Has anyone replaced their Oxygen Sensor with the single wire one that comes with the splicing sleeve? Just wondering what the difference is besides the price. $25.00 compared to $60.00. Information is that you just replace the sensor in the cat and cut the wire from the existing and splice the new one on.

TIA

If your O2 sensor is of the multi-wire variety I think you will have to replace it with the same part.
I have an '82 SC with the single wire sensor. My local imported auto parts store referred to the O2 sensor they were stocking as a "universal" sensor. Since both it and the Porsche specific sensor are made by Bosch I figured I had nothing to lose (especially since the Porsche sensor was $130). Cut the wire from the old sensor, crimped it to the new one and installed. Works fine, too.

If your car has a 3 wire sensor, it is recommended to replace it w/a 3 wire sensor. The two additional wires are for the heater element inside of the sensor. The heating element allows the O2 sensor to come up to temperature faster thereby allowing the system to go into closed loop (O2 sensors must above 300 degrees F before they function correctly). Generally, any Bosch 3 wire sensor will work fine. Of course it is always 'best' to replace it with a direct replacement part (no splicing connectors required).

Bill,

I see no reason why it wouldn't work since all you will be eliminating is the heating element.

I too would be interested how it works.
