901 Tranny Questions

Hi guys.
Just got my car back from being serviced, to be told that the oil slick I get on my garage floor originates from the bolt covering the speedo drive. My wrench is of the opinion the only way to fix it is retap the case and start again. Has anyone a suggestion on how to plug the leak which is less drastic? Even if it is only temporary, to hold me over until I really need to drop the engine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

While I’m at it, I found the i.d stamp on my tranny – 902 / 01. Is anyone able to shed light on gear ratios and back ground.

Many thanks

SORRY, THE GEAR RATIO INFO I GAVE EARLIER REFERRED TO THE 902/1 NOT THE 902/01 - John Walker gives the correct ratios for
the 902/01 in the post below.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here but there appear to be two seals inboard of this coupling nut (bolt covering speedo drive?) and the set screw that retains the speedo elbow drive in a 902. I don't believe the outside threads are meant to be oil seals. The factory shop manual states the speedo drive can be removed with the transmission in the car but supported as the tranmssion support has to be removed. Then it looks to be a bench top job to replace the seals on and in the guide bushing holding the elbow drive. If the coupling nut or guide bushing threads are stripped then these parts could simply be replaced without disturbing the transmission front cover. If it is the front cover threads for the set screw (over to the side of the speedo drive) that are stripped then perhaps the transmission has to be removed but I wonder if even this thread could be repaired with a helicoil or timesert with the transmission in place. Paul look in the 901 section of fsactory shop manual if you have acess to one. Jim

Thanks Jim

I started working my way through the relevant sections of the manual last night and will get back into it this evening.

Look under "Tachometer Drive", section 16 RA, figures 118 through 121. Cheers, Jim
