Question What do you think is fair value on this car

My wife said ok on a new purchase but I dont think the seller would take anything near the current bid. What do you think its worth considering it is as decribed. I live very close to this car and im considering a in person inspection. Is this a desireable model ?
Do you think I could get it for less than 20k ? I emailed the seller and im still waiting to get a responce. Also what do you guys think of the color ? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=600989727&r=0&t=0&indexURL=1&photoDisplayType=2#ebaylargephotohosting

It depends. I saw this ad, but there really aren't any details about the car. The success in car shows aside (but where are the Fuchs?), it could be worth anywhere between $17-25K. If the car is mechanically perfect and clean on the inside, then $25K plus or minus a few thousand sounds about right. 72K miles is fairly low, but not low enough to put it into the high $20K range. While you can find people *asking* $30K for a car like this, I don't think any of them are selling for that.

Get a PPI and that will give you some insight into what the car is worth. As for the color, white is my second least favorite (behind Guard's Red), but that shouldn't have any bearing on *your* car...

87 has the nice G-50 and real A/C.
With 70K on the odo and if it is in fact a well cared for car, w/ documents, maintainance... I'd say it is in the $25K ballpark.

Sharp looking car, I must say.
If your close, your a lucky dawg. PPI, and a close inspection is the only way to go.
Thats the only way I'd ever see myself bidding on an Ebay auto.... if I was close...

The car looks nice, but I'd expect it to be outrageously priced. I'm betting it doesn't hit it's reserve, without even knowing what that is. The chief factors are that it's a concourse winner, and those guys tend to want full MSRP for their cars, adjusted for inflation, and that the car is a late 80s Carrera, which tend to be overvalued because of the G50 tranny and their scarceness (sales were very low in those years). While the features are appealing, you frequently see them asking for prices similar to a used Boxster or 964, when both of them are technically superior cars, whatever their shortcomings.

My two cents,
Emanuel

It does look to be in super-mint condition, low, (but not ridiculously low), miles. White w/ burgandy would have been the weakest combination possible to sell when new- I sold them in '87. All new 911's sold quickly in those days, but white coupes a little slower.

Actually, I think that e-bay bids are an excellent guage of market value in most cases, if car is presented well. This ad leaves a lot to be desired- almost zero info. Only thing is, sometimes you cannot tell what the market is paying until final hours of auction. I disagree w/ price estimates stated here, my guess is that $20k would buy a cabriolet in similar cond. and year w/ today's economy. Or very close. I also think that 3.2's are getting old enough so that there is not much difference in value thru range of years, 84-89. Some, but not a lot. All condition/miles.

Purchase approval from your wife?

Remember, it's always easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

White is the color I was hoping for when I shopped for my 911. I got Quartz Grey Metallic (Smokey Quartz Metallic) and I coul;dn't be more pleased, but I still consider white to be one of the best colors overall.

Garage queens make me nervous, though. I got a nice car in very good shape (except for the head stud thing....be SURE to get a PPI), but I intended from the beginnign to drive the thing daily, so a garage queen might have been a slight waste for me.

I'm not sure if the automatic transmision would add or detract from the value of the car. What do you all think???

Looks like a decent car. It's local, you gonna go see it? If so, we'd be interested in your report.

Ask the seller for the vin, post it, and I can do a background on the car for you. NICB, Autocheck, and Carfax. I can also see if it was sold at an auction & for how much.
