Sunroof Seal Removal

Going to be replacing the front sunroof seal this week. Found good advice for products to glue the new seal on, but not finding much for removing of the existing seal and sealant.

Any tips or recommended products to get rid of the left over crud / glue / sealant that will likely be left behind on the paint?

Thanks

jb

I'm up for a complete changeout of all seals,...this should be helpful....as always...

There's many prioducts out there to dissolve this adhesive (gooBGONE, citrus-based,...dedicated removers,...any should work fine.

Big thing is to get that piece in nicely,...which piece is it?

For now am starting with the front velvent strip (or whatever the technical term is)

Am not that great with the mechanical skills so will start with the obvious deficeincies first. Have a few days off work and tackling several projects:

- front hood struts
- airbox pop-off valve
- sunroof seal
- driver's door speaker
- power mirrors (only have up and down movement, no side to side movement)

Hey John,
Here is a link I saved for when I have to do the same job.
Try plain old solvent first to see what it will do on the adhesive. Soak a small rag so you can control where it goes. If that doesn't work, try WD-40 on a it.
If you have to move up to more aggressive thinners and removers, be very careful of the paint surrounding the area you are working on.
Good luck!

Guy's

Start with a heat gun or hair dryer. Heat the weatherstrip to loosen the glue. (USE YOUR HEAD !!!!! If the weather strip is on fire or your paint is melting you obviously used to much heat for to long.) Get a piece started and pull as you heat it will come off easily.

To clean the glue off use one of the many paint prep solvents out there. It's used to clean a surface before painting. Final Clean, Pre Wash, Wax and Grease Remover. Just put in on a rag and rub.

My old weather strip came right off, no heat needed. I used some Goo Be Gone to clean up the area. Didn't do much good but I was afraid to use anything stronger and strip the paint.

Putting the weatherstrip on is a PITA. Very messy, the 3M weatherstripping adhesive is very sticky! If you can find an extra set of hands use them. I misaligned one corner and have to do it over again.

Finished the front sunroof seal removal and replacement. Finished job is not up to concours quality, but it works well for me.

As a note, what a major PITA removing the old adhesive. I swear it was 1980 original Porsche adhesive. I tried three different solvents and none did much good.

Eventually I had to fit a poly brush tip to my dremel tool and mechanically remove the old adhesive. It worked quite well but ended up destroying the tip.

The black 3M weatherstrip adhesive went on fairly well without much stringing to cause me grief.

Found that using painters tape to position the seal prior to and after using the adhesive worked very well.
