Wow, that's one that I had never heard of, the mooney plane engine, the tractor, the various war time and prewar vehicles, and a bunch of the engineering stuff from the last several years, yes, but this helicopter engine, nope, never heard of it.

Vertical is not unusual on Helo engines. Many of them are this way.

I realize this is an OLD topic, but I had to revive it because of something I saw today on Science Channel.
I was watching "How It's Made" on how airships (or blimps) are made and noticed that they were hoisting a turbocharged aircooled Porsche motor into the blimp for propulsion! I couldn't believe it so I did some searching on the company who makes the blimps and sure enough they use 2 930 motors to power their blimps. I wonder where they get their motors. Our Airships Quote:

I once used the pistons and cylinders out of a blimp in a 3.0L 1978. They take the engine apart after so many hours send the block, crank, and rods back to the factory for rebuild. The rest gets trashed or actioned off. Payed 125.00 for two sets of heads and two sets of pistons and cylinders and they where in great shape.

I'm sort of into heli's... I was on my way back from a motorcycle trip to Alaska when I passed by a air museum on the Oregon coast. This wad burred in the back. I figured it had a type 1 or 356 motor. I doubt it ever flew. Also seen this: ![]()

Blimp`s to my knowledge where not turbo charged. I may be wrong. The engine I used was a euro 77- 78 3.0L. There was also a set of turbo pistons and cylinders in the pile but think they might of been from a Mooney.
Blimps use leaded fuel and the domes on the pistons where larger then the ones I took out. The car ran very well. I never computed the compression ratio but it was one of the best running 3.0L`s I ever romped on. |
