Used cars history ??
I'm not sure where I saw the service noted, but does anyone have the name of the group who provides historical data on used cars?
It may have been on this board that I first saw it. Thanks. |

I think you're thinking of carfax (www.carfax.com). They'll give you the buy/sell history of the car for a price. I've found they're generally accurate, but don't be surprised if there are some "holes" in the history, and sometimes they may do things like report a Targa as a convertable. They're helpfull, but they can't be taken literally. Additionally, if you're concerned about flood titles, a flood title is only reported if a claim is issued with an insurance company, so once again, they only report what's known to them.

Watch out, most of those services are great for newer cars (w/ standardized vin numbers etc) but kinda worthless for older vehicles. If you plug in an older Porsche VIN they won't even recognize it as a valid number.

I believe carfax will only work with VINs '81 and newer, and yes, it can be incomplete.

Old thread but brings up a topic of interest. There was an article in the Dec issue of PorscheNaut (LSRPCA monthly mag) about a P-car owner who discovered his car was once owned by a rock star. Where/how do you find history on a 30+ year old car?
