Rear SC sway bar id

I am still trying to sort out my 83 SC suspension. The bushings appear new and read Weltmeister 027 and appear poly of sorts. The bar measures 21mm to my best guess. What is the point of the hose clamps on the inner side of each bushings? Are the drop links for an SC the same as for a later Carrera upgrade? My current links appear original and rather thin. Thanks so much.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1293680579.jpg

hose clamps are not needed. Perhaps someone's misguided attempt to "keep" the bushings in place..

Judging by some recent questions.. this is quite the SC you came upon!

What you have there appears to be the standard weltmiester set up including the drop links. The clamps are part of the weltmiester set up and I believe they are intended to make sure the bar does not move laterally - not sure they are really needed though

The bushings may be poly from Weltmeister but the bar appears to be a standard Carrera rear at 21 mm. There should be a matching 22 mm.used up front hung below and to the rear of the front suspension under the control arms. This 22/21 combo from the 86 Carreras is an excellent upgrade with less hassle than the Weltmeister bars. weltmeister bars are straight rods with adjustable arms bolted on to each end. Not curved like the bar you have shown.

Jeff Burger 12-30-2010 06:46 AM

The ends that are barely shown in the picture are weltmiester - the other side (not shown in picture) should slide and clamp over the end of the round sway bar if Weltmiester. The end that we can see in the picture attaches to a custom eccentric provided by weltmiester. The bar also appears to be weltmiester. If it is a stock 21 bar from porsche, the end will be flatened and have a large hole drilled in it for attaching to a rubber bushed extension that attaches further back on the arm. better pictures would clear this up

You may have threaded Welt drop links but I don,t see a Welt bar. It appears to curve after it exits the body bushing as a stock bar . Also the Welt bars were only made in 19 and 22 mm sizes The factory rear bar was available in 18 and 21.

A 21mm stock rear bar would be from an 86 Carrera. If so you might have a front 22mm bar from an 86-89. This is a popular upgrade.

They may have gone to a stiffer Welt bushing with the change.

The rear Weltmeister bars are curved. Fronts, no. I have 22 front and rear. Maybe you did not measure accurately? I am not sure what the hose clamp is there for. Mine do not have that.

johnsjmc 12-30-2010 12:24 PM

Yes You are correct the rear is curved .I went and looked. I still can,t tell from these pics if OEM or Weltmeister though. Pelican still lists Weltmeister bars and has a pic of the ends of both F&R on this site.

Here are some more pics if that helps with the end of the sway bar and downlinks. I don't have calipers so the 21 is my best guess with what I have.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1293764439.jpg

Looks like my weltmeister bar. Same drop links same mounting points. As already stated clamps are to keep it from shifting. IIRC they come in 20mm & 22mm. So yours in that ballpark. Go the Harbor Freight and get one of their $8 calipers. Wouldn't build a motor with one but great for this kind of thing.

deeking55 12-30-2010 07:01 PM

How does one adjust the bar? By using the threaded rod? What do I use as a baseline in terms of how to adjust it?

fastfredracing 12-30-2010 07:09 PM

Sliding that clamp on the bar rearward lowers the bars roll stiffness, and moving it forward increases it. The links are just there to dial out any side loads, and get at the right level. Looks identical to the welty bars I have on my sc, .

Flieger 12-30-2010 07:11 PM

Stiffness is adjusted by loosening the hose clamp on the lever part of the bar, the end attached to the drop link. Slide it out towards the end for looser, in toward the bar for tighter. Yes it is hokey. You get what you pay for.

Ya, 22mm welt.

deeking55 12-31-2010 03:48 AM

How does the Welt compare to the sway bar from a 86+ Carrera which I understand is a popular upgrade? I spend the majority of my time on the street and I have more pressing issues in my front suspension.
thanks-

johnsjmc 12-31-2010 05:41 AM

Yes It is a 22 Welt. It is an OK product for the price and works well enough. It should be matched with a 22 mm front bar., either OEM or aftermarket. The factory bars are not adjustable and if you want to change their stiffness ,you change the whole bar. There is a 22 mm Welt front bar available but it is a through body design and more difficult to install than the OEM style originally on your SC. What is on the front now? Weltmeister or?

deeking55 12-31-2010 06:46 AM

Believe it or not, I don't have a front sway currently, apparently the PO didn't see a need for it. I would like to upgrade to a front Carrera bar as the front Welt is more than I want to mess with.

911st 12-31-2010 02:02 PM

A stock 911 with a stiffer rear sway and no front sway make very little sense and could be dangerous to drive by most. Get a bit to hot into a corner and it is a prescription for reduced rear traction and significant over steer.

Usually with a 22 / 22 sway bar set up the front is set stiff and the rear on the softer side of the adjustment range to start. Then fine tuned from there.

Running a stock 22 front in rubber and a 22 rear welt rear in hard busings is not my first choice. It will make the car rotate more than stock which might be fine on an AutoX course but not the best for a street car.
