Need pic of SC front sway bar/attachments
 

For those of you following my bumbling around on my SC thank you for your patience. Apparently my 83 SC has no front swaybar and I can see no attachments on the a-arms for it. I removed the pan covering the fuel pump as well but I can't tell what the PO has done in removing it. Will I need new a-arms or can something be welded on? I was hoping to put a late 80s Carrera sway on, nothing fancy. I can't find any good pics in my Bentley.

the attachments are small outer brackets on the a-arms that hold sway bar bushings. (same shape as ones on the rear bar, which you can see by rear tires). under the front belly pan, there are also inner brackets attach to metal strips which connect to the same bolts which hold the pan on. IIRC the strips are removable (they have hole through which the belly pan bolts pass through). do a search for roll bar install or a-arm removal and you can see photos of the bar/brackets.

I did a search and there were a number of pictures of the a-arm but not anything I could find to give you a good answer. I suggest you take a picture of your a-arm and post it. If you don't have the U brackets as described above, you may need to install a through-the-body style sway bar. It will give you a better selection of sizes and adjustability you don't get with a stock bar.
Check the Elephant Racing site for the through-the -body styles. If you want to go stock, you will have to find some weld on brackets for the stock bushings. The only 'bolt in' locations are under the plate that covers the steering rack. You'll need 4 bushings and two U brackets for the bolt in mounts in addition to the 2 weld in brackets.
BTW...do you have a rear swaybar?

I can post some pics tonight on my a-arms but there are certainly no sway bar brackets on them. A through the body style involves welding and some front suspension work doesn't it? Certainly better but likely more than I want to chew off. Would you recommend welding some brackets to my existing a-arms or just finding some used ones - I would be worried about making sure the brackets are in the correct place.

There is a picture of the front sway bar on your SC Bentley Repair service manual. That should give you some idea how the front sway bar is mounted. Shown with the brackets too. The A-arm should have a metal loop for the rubber bushing unless removed by PO.

You could find a picture of the front sway bar mounting in the picture posted by EURO911SC in the For Sale section under 'FS: SC susp. parts'.

Click on "Tech info center" at the top of this page and then parts diags and then mid yr 1974-89 and then front axle. The pic shows both early (thru body and later SC under suspension style front bars. The curved style bar is std on SC and up. Notice a round ring on top of each lower control arm. That is what the outer ends of the bar connect to (with a rubber bushing )

I think it would be easier to add the brackets to your a-arms then to use another set of a-arms. You'd be into setting ride height and doing a corner balance. The only reason I'd go there is you planned to put in new a-arm bushings like ER poly bronze or go to bigger front (and rear) torsion bars.

Where could I get these brackets? I called one Porsche junkyard and they were only willing to sell the entire a- arm. I don't know that fabrication is a good idea as I don't even have one to go from.

I cant imagine why the brackets are missing. This style of swaybar mounting was used from 74 until 89 so unless someone changed both front A arms to older parts the brackets are likely there. If they aren,t and you are buying a bar anyway then you might as well use the Welt front bar .The kit includes all mounting hardware BUT it is configured as the earlier through body bar and is more time consuming to install.
Look at the parts diag. I referred to earlier Part #22 is the 74 up bar Part #25 is the earlier style and part#13 is the lower control arm with the "loop" ring which is the bracket we are talking about
