best speakers for an 86 cab?

I am looking at upgrading the speaker system in my 86 cab., I may even do a new head unit too, any thoughts on exact models with good sound quality. I know about Bose and Infinity etc, I wanted to know what is it that you guys have?

that really depends on how much you want to spend. personally i am a big fan of dyn audio speakers but some consider them too expensive. i have found the alpine type-r series to be a decent cross between quality and price.

I'd guess the best ones Ian has are about the best. You need to deicide how many thousand dollar bills you are going to throw at this first.

also whether you want the wt. penalty of the "best"

Everyone hear's speakers differently so you really need to go to a stereo store and hear for yourself.

I have Kenwood full range speakers. I thought they sounded good and I liked the Neodymium magnets to keep the weight down. I have 6-1/2" in the doors (although 6-3/4" will probably fit) and 5-1/4" in the rear. I had the rear deck recovered to fit the 5-1/4 speakers without the original holes being partially exposed.

First and foremost, you're not going to get a great sounding stereo in a Cab without spending lots and lots of money. I've installed a Blaupunkt head unit, 5 1/4" component speakers in the doors, and 4" coaxials in the rear. Going with stock sizes, everything was bolt-in except for the front tweeters. These I mounted up above the power window switches. Sounds great with the top up, so-so with the top down, just about useless with top down at 70mph. So far spent less than $500, still planning on adding a subwoofer under the passenger seat and an amplifier to get a little more volume before the distortion sets in.

I have MB Quart and an alpine headunit. Sounds great. As said above, top down "ok", >70 worthless.

ADS 300i plates in the rear. ADS amp up front in the tunk. JL Audio 2 piece speakers in front doors(w/crossovers), and a cheap Blaupunkt Head unit.

Works great in my Targa.

I am thrilled with the result of the $1k that I spent.
I have a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X794 head unit, which actually looks very much at home in the '87 dashboard- no crazy lights or graphics, etc. It has radio, CD player, and an iPod hookup, such that I can just leave my iPod in the glove box, and control it from either the head unit or the neat little remote it came with.

For speakers I went with Focal Polyglass in the front doors- not cheap, but excellent sound.

What is out there that fits? The one Blaupunkt had was discontinued and I haven't looked in a while.

Thanks for all the help, I decided to go with Boston Acoustics 6 1/2 components in front and 4" in back. I have a simple JVC head unit that is ok, would you all suggest an amp and a sub to go along with this?

the jbl gto804 sub is really nice, and cheap too!

JBL GTO804 8" Grand Touring Series Single 4 ohm Subwoofer GTO 804

being that it is an 8" sub you can easily find a lot of places to mount it, like the rear footwells, smuggler's box or anywhere else you can think up. i chose to remove my rear seats entirely and run a pair of them.

as far as an amp, since i am an audionut i will always suggest you get one. for the average user i would say run with the headunit power only for a while and see if it is enough to make you happy. if not then we can find you a decent amp to power everything. when/if you decide to add an amp and sub we can go from there since you will need to pick an amp that matches up to the specs of your speakers.

Did you buy it recently? All the plces I looked listed it as discontinued by mfg.

And have you actually measured under the passenger seat to make sure there is a enough room. Isn't that where the Motronic brain lives?

Agreed, it is the smallest I have seen too. But with the Motronic "brain" undr the passennger seat, is there room for it? I REALLY hope this fits. It would bbe a great way to get more rounded sound in a 911.

Thanks for the help here!
