Currently, Valvoline VR1 20w50. But I think I'm going back to the Harley Davidson 20w50. Engine seemed to run cooler and less noisy with less smoke(valve guides need attention)

dmwallace 01-02-2011 08:14 PM

Swepco 306 Supreme 15w-40

If you want to learn more about oils for our cars you should check out the links that Flieger posted.

nineball 01-02-2011 08:43 PM

vr1 20w50. it's available locally, decently priced and specs out to the needs of my engine (zddp).

HarryD 01-02-2011 10:35 PM

I have it on a good authority (http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/367300-ultimate-motor-oil-thread-why-we-hate-cj4-sm-oils.html) that we need not waste our good money on fancy oils....

:D ;)

Oil? What?

bsimonson 01-03-2011 01:30 AM

I use a locally available oil, Agrol Super Syntet 5W-40. It's a SHPD-oil with all the right additives. I believe that synthetics are superior in many ways and I want as good lubrication as possible when the engine is cold, hence a 5W oil.

stlrj 01-03-2011 02:45 AM

Any brand off the shelf 10w30.

Why? Best lubrication at cold start where most wear occurs and cooler operation due to less internal friction, eliminating the need for anything more than a stock fender mounted trombone oil cooler.

Cheers,

Joe

Mobil 1 15/50 always used it.

jleonej 01-03-2011 04:53 AM

I know, I know not another oil thread but I was just curious as to who uses what brands. I am not looking at changing what I use or anything of that nature. I don't want to know who thinks what brand is best, I was just curious as to who uses what. I happen to use Mobil 1 in my 86.

esample 01-03-2011 08:59 AM

Why, Brad Penn of course.

No Mobil V-twin 20-50 users out there. Thought this was a full syn designed for air cooled engines with lots of zinc. A bit pricey though

WIL84911 01-03-2011 10:49 AM

Royal Purple 20 50 but it's no longer on sale so I may be switching.

On the 993 I run Mobil1 15W50

BP 20 W50,..in the South,..all year,..every 3k miles...no cold starts below 25 degrees F.....(but that;'s just me).....

Definately: no additives,....(aside from healthy injections of Techron....)

Best,

Cliff Notes for Oil Selection

Cliff notes version:

Older engines (pre-mid 90's) need high levels (around 1200 ppm plus correct level of detergents) of Zinc (Zn) and Phosphorus (P) to protect cams and other high pressure surfaces.

With the introduction of roller tappets in most engines by the mid-90's, this requirement is relaxed and Zn and P levels can be reduced. The EPA pressured API to reduce the Zn and P levels to (hopefully) extend the life of the catalytic converter which is poisoned by Zn and P. They complied.

Use 20W-50 or 15W-40 oil. Brands frequently sugggested here, in no particular order, include:

Brad Penn 20W-50
Valvoline VR-1 20W-50
Kendall GT 20W-50
SWEPCO 15W-40
Royal Purple

There are others as well.

Milo2361 01-03-2011 07:56 PM

I had emailed shell about their oil and Zn and P content, received an email next day from them saying it is rated at or above 1200ppm. Ive been using Shell Rotella T 15w-40 basically since i acquired the car(10w-40 when it gets damn cold in NE). no problems yet, oil change intervals of 3-4k miles. cost is around $2.50 a quart.

Neel 01-03-2011 09:11 PM

Since you asked, Royal Purple..

m110 01-03-2011 09:39 PM

Brad Penn 20W-50 because people I trust use it...the threads seem to indicate it works well and it is relatively cheap for me.

Swepco 306 15W-40 also seems to work accoording to the experts, a little more pricey for me. If changing oil hyperfrequently I don't think it really matters, as long as it is heavy.
