Easy way to check for 7:31 R&P?
Just like the title says... Is there an easy way to check for an 7:31 Ring and Pinion w/o cracking the case? I was told it had one but would like to check it.
Thanks |
The best and most sure way is to crawl under there, drain the transmission oil, and remove the differential side cover to pull the diff and count teeth.

OK Steve, My trans is on the floor. So dumb ?... how may teeth should it have? Sorry, I'm just not a trans guy.
I assume the output flange on that side comes off too? Is that easy to remove? My air compressor is cold blooded and it's about 24 deg. here right now. |
Yep, the flanges are easy to remove, as are the bolts holding the sidecover. Then you pull the differential out and count the number of teeth on the pinion, which will be left inside the case.
|
The ring gear on the diff has 31. The pinion has 7. Hence 7:31. ;)
|
Well that figures (7:31) I thought it might be a dumb question.
Thanks all. I'll check it in the morning. |
Well it has a 8/31 R&P... I also removed the shift fork cover to take a look. I believe the 1st/2nd dog teeth are what can be seen here? They appear to be in good shape (symmetrical) The numbers are either scraped off or are non-existent so I'm not sure what I have here. The diff cover is the later one with the extra ribbing ring around it. My car is a 78' which I believe came with the weaker cover? It has obviously been apart before as it was resealed with blue RTV. Can the cases and 5th gear cover be removed/split fairly easy in order to replace the gaskets?

Any takers on the above ?'s

They can. Look for Pete Z's tutorial.
