Cheaper alternative to yellow fog light lenses?
I cant bring myself to spend $55 per lense for yellow fog lights on my 1980 SC. Would these bulbs be compatable in my stock fog lights?
Thanks... ![]()

Don't know about the bulbs but I remember a thread on yellow headlight lenses where someone mentioned a yellow tint spray applied to the inside of the lens...

Go to Michael's the hobby store. Krylon makes a window stained glass tint, it comes in a rattlecan. Paint the INSIDE......keep the nozzle clear. It likes to clog.
Van is like 7.99.

Thanks....can a painted surface really handle the heat and stress of the inside of a fog light?

Go with the Krylon if you want yellow lenses. Use yellow bulbs if you want to stick with clear lenses: CPI Gold Selective Yellow H3 55w Bulb.
BTW, 5000K lights are not yellow, but a bright bluish white, like HIDs.

Yes, I noticed that too - the box says 5000K but the caption below says 2500K...
Maybe they are first tinted blue to increase light output then tinted yellow for effect ![]() ![]()

Thanks for the graphic on colors...most of the yellow ones seem to be 2500K rating. For the price of $20 per pair, I'll give it a shot plus I can keep the lenses clear.

First off those are not HID if you look at them there is no xenon chamber there is a filament (at least it looks like a filament) big difference second 5000K is the temp the light emits for them to have 5000K and 2500K on the same box is misleading I would set the box down and back away. What I suspect is the filament emits 5000K and they put a tint on the bulb to make it emit 2500K whatever the price they are not something I would give another look at.

I saw a close up on amazon and that is a filament which means it can't be a xenon HID bulb probably a halogen but for 5 bucks I would bet it isn't even halogen.

I'm not really interested in HID bulbs...just a cheaper alternative to $110 for yellow lenses since I live in foggy location. Here's another possibility that's listed as 2500K ...

My point is they are mis-representing the product so the quality IMHO is suspect so would you want to take the time to pull your lens off your fog lights put these in there and just when you need them most they are burnt out. You might look at these PIAA is a good company and quality is know PIAA Plasma Ion Yellow (H3) Halogen Light Bulbs|PIAA Light Bulbs|PIAA High Output Automotive Light Bulb

Copyright ©2009 Daniel J. Stern I did this with new clear lenses I bought from Pelican. Make sure you clean the inside glass good then what I did was put the two lenses next to each other and laid down three coats to the inside of the lenses. This is how it looks; ![]() Easy project

I believe with HID you need an extra transformer/power pack. So the bulbs that are shown are not even close to HID. Alot of stuff coming from the Asian countries are also not what they have on the labels. Try to stick with the proper products - OSRAM or Phillips and Bosch - make the right bulbs for just about any headlight or auxilary light. Around here the wiring has been suspect and melted thru some very expensive headlights! Be careful - as well alot of the over seas products are not DOT approved.

The ones I'm posting are about $15 for two...it may be worth getting better quality PIAA bulbs for $40 as was suggested...I'll check things out my local auto parts store.

FWIW the yellow paint is easy-peasy. and reversible with a bit of lacquer thinner.

![]() Yes, if you want yellow light from your fogs, the least expensive route will likely be to paint the lens with some proper transparent glass paint. If a bulb burns out, you can still replace it with a regular white one in the middle of the night from that little gas station just east of nowhere and still have yellow light. If you want yellow bulbs, just go and get some Osram, Phillips or Narva. Maybe Bosch too, but I think they're just reboxed Osram... For the most part any others are just overpriced with questionable "features". Technology such as plasma ion or similar might not be all they're cracked up to be. Read the little bit in the Stern link above for some good information. Here it is again: Daniel Stern Lighting Consultancy and Supply This whole project shouldn't cost you more than about 25 bucks, whether paint or bulbs. Good luck, and let us know what you did and how it turned out.
