Red face I need some advice!

Due to a very stupid mechanic I have to do a engine rebuild on my 76 Carrera 3.0L.

Without going into to much detail 3 pistons are "detinated" - no holes just pitted. On a compression test they where O.K. but my new mechanic advised replacing them.(obviously)

This will be an expensive option so I was wondering if they can be used again or repaired?

2 of the bores are also slightly scored but the car did not smoke!

They are the Mahle SC with Nikasil bores replaced only 26000km's ago (before I purchased the car).

Can anybody shed some light on the situation?

I've bumped Targa4me's post to the head of the queue.
I'm sure he (she) would appreciate a response.

It would be appreciated if you *did* give a bit more detail as in....How did the 3 pistons become damaged by detonation?
And how did your 'new mechanic' know that they are so damaged?
More info required, please.

Thanks Doug,

The mechanic tuned the car too lean and oil thermostat to the front trombone was not opening.

The car was running in the RED and he advised me that PORSCHES run hot and not to worry about it.

Since this last post I have examined the barrels and one has small holes all over it like it has be nibbled at by a RAT- (the mechanic!)

There are two others with fine markings but otherwise the rest are OK.

One cam lobe is also pitted and 4 rockers.

When I drove the car I complained that the car sounded like somebody firing a machine gin a metal room! It was mechanically noise, tappety and pinging severely.

I guess when you’re new to the game your going to be taken for a ride…an expensive one at that.

Cheers
