I thought I would show my coffe table

I put this together a few years ago and have never shown it here. However, tonight I noticed a table being put together by a fellow Texan so I thought it was time to share mine as well. Mine is a little more traditional in its setup and appearance. If only I could get the one in my car to look as good.

And the boss is ok with it? I love it.

cgarr 01-07-2011 05:27 PM

Bob Ashlock 01-07-2011 09:07 PM

Hey, let's figure out how to get that thing fired up right there in the living room!

Noah930 01-07-2011 09:28 PM

No honey, I'm not rebuilding an engine in the living room. I'm just, uh, putting together a coffee table. Yeah, that's it. I promise you'll love it.

Looks great.

TibetanT 01-07-2011 10:54 PM

Wow! A ten thousand dollar coffee table....cool.

Will you be serving Red Line coffee with that? :)

RoninLB 01-07-2011 11:46 PM

Nice, but I would never sneek it by the Vice President of Buildings and Grounds around here.

slow&rusty 01-08-2011 06:45 AM

Wow... I like it!! ALOT..but not sure I could justify all that $$$ sitting in the living room...unless it was a bunk motor that was prettied up.

75USCarrera 01-08-2011 07:23 AM

How much are those and does anyone have the vendor info? Please PM me....

I wanta Porsche Boxer flat six coffee table NOOOOOOOOOOOOOW......

rexav8r 01-08-2011 07:41 AM

VERY cool, but Carrera tensioners will extend the life of your table !

Por_sha911 01-08-2011 07:49 AM

Very nice! Sadly, my family HOA would never approve one.

I'm curious how much was the one at Hershey?

For fun, you should find something to look like an oil leak (like the gag plastic fake spilled milk...) and put it by the motor on April 1st.

911FASCINATION 01-08-2011 07:57 AM

Sweet! Any idea of how much it weighs? Great way to store parts in plain sight-it's pure art man...

^ Not a Porsche motor but it is a boxer.

Seems sad it looks better than the one in my car:D

I bet there are enough junk parts laying around in the collective Pelican head's garages to assemble a dozen of these.

I've got some old cylinders and cam housings, and got rid of a few worthless cases a while ago.
I wonder if Byron has any spare parts?

I could probably build one at John Walker's Swap Meet if I just bring the glass. Most of the stuff at the swap meet is usable, therefore valuable, but JW put out the call for people to bring junk, we could have us a coffee table assembling party right in the middle of the parking lot.

That would be kinda fun, huh?

1971 911T 01-08-2011 10:00 AM

there's a conversation starter.

would be really stonkin if somebody decided to have the motor on top, on a raised pedestal. like in a museum. brightly spotlit. room heater anyone ? haha

rrichar 01-08-2011 10:02 AM

Thanks for the comments/complements about the table. Just to clarify, this was built from a junk 2.0L that I bought on Ebay. It came in pieces. It was not free but it wasn't like I was paying up for a complete fresh running engine. It turned out not to be much more expensive than a quality coffee table from a furniture retailer. Someday I intend to sell off the internals to help recoup some of the initial expense. There have been a few times when I have been tempted to steal parts from it but so far have come to my senses. There will come a day when I swap these Italian Webers for the Carter/Webers currently on my car. Also understand this table is not and would not be allowed in the living room of our house either. It is in my home office.

Someone asked about weight. I can't tell you how much it weights but I can tell you that my son and I easily carried it from the garage. Remember the heavy internal parts aren't in there. The 3/4 inch glass probably weights more than the engine.

Jrboulder 01-08-2011 10:24 AM

Very cool!
I want one.

Why don't you build one from collected junk parts at the swap meet and then raffle(or auction) it off for your favorite charity like American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity...?

Although your table is great I think a more rectangular shape would be ideal in front of a sofa. Something like a 917 motor :-)

Here ya go!

My wife bought this for me for Valentines day a long time ago. It ran in the L&M 917. Real CanAm oil and grime still on it. Very light magnesium case, threw a rod and was retired.
Would consider "letting it go" to a new owner. If interested....PM.
