SSI heat exchangers

I was wondering why my SSI is discolored is there a way to restore them. I plan on putting a new exhaust unit in from M&K Active muffler, so I want to make sure it's all looking good. Also I did see some stampings on the SSI what does this identify?

Serial numbers.

No need to clean them up unless it bothers you. They all tend to patina over time….the road, the heat, possibly some oil, etc.

The stamping is just the part number.

I have never seen SSI's discolored like that. Baked on oil and salt corrosion? You might try some red Scotch Brite to shine them up.

There is a new process that I'm seeing posted on IG from various dry ice cleaning folks. I don't know anything about it, but it's supposed to take the SS back to near original condition. Seems like black magic right now, only because I haven't looked into it at all yet. You might want to look into it though.

if they are stainless, some rubbing compound, scotch brite pads, rags, and elbow grease. Dremel with 1" abrasive wheels for the nooks and crannies.

Finish with metal polish if you really want to make them shine.
Here's mine:

A professional ceramic coat would offer a more permanent solution.
Wouldn't work for me though, steep driveways, speed bumps with a low ride height.

Wow @thetorch those look fantastic.
Dry ice could be an option if I do my undercarriage.
Thinking if I might go with OSPHO product to clean them looks promising well reviewed. I really don't want to remove them so I hope I can make them look good without removal i read somewhere that you have to be very careful in removal as the studs can break and require heat sometimes.

Are there air-injectors (unconnected and possibly left ' open') still in the block? (as seen on the last 2 images)

Those air injectors used to connect to a distribution tube that was fed by the air pump. You should be able to remove those injectors and replace with metric plugs.

TJJST: Those fittings are just blowing exhaust out under the engine, and probably making a racket too. Remove and plug the heads ASAP.

Here is what those injectors look like. I expected they would be hard to remove, but mine screwed out easily. Your job is complicated by the heat exchangers in the way, but you can probably get a socket with an extension on them.

Pelican sells a plug for the ports, Part PEL-BRC-02.

Yes I know, that's why I was asking/wondering why it looked like these are still in there (unconnected)

Cleaning used SSI exhausts

It can be done, just takes lots of work! Here is a set that I cleaned up after having been on my SC for about 10 years. I don't remember exactly what I used as a cleaner but probably tried several things.

Nice they look great after 10 years worried about removing the air injectors I feel like they have been on for quite some time. Hopefully some penetrating oil will do the job. I think for me it's best I remove the SSI to get a good clean
