Pulled out my A/C and lost 63 lbs.

Finally did it, contemplated it for a while, searched PP for info and last weekend just decided to do it. Not nearly as time consuming as I thought it would be, maybe 6 hours total.
I weighed the parts and they came to 63 lbs. Plenty of room now to work in the engine compartment.

Since I have owned the car there has only been a few instances when I have even needed the A/C, if its nice out I have the Targa top off. The few times I did use it I was disappointed with the semi cool air coming out anyways. I figured either spend money to get it working properly or pull it and loose some weight.

I had intentions of taking pictures of the entire procedure and doing up a thread on the removal, but once I got rolling there was no stopping me. All I can show you now is a picture of a big box of parts.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing. Can you feel a difference while driving?

Unfortunately there is 3 feet of snow here and the car is in for the winter, I will have to get back to you in late April or early May.

I did the same as you ... contemplated removing the useless AC and finally went ahead last Summer and removed the compressor and condenser..I'm going to remove the hoses and lines and all the other stuff before i take my car out this year ...

Sure cleans out the engine compt and gives way more working access in there

Cheers !

I pulled the compressor and rear deck lid condenser last summer. Still have the hoses and under belly condenser to remove. Plan on leaving the front blower motor in the air on the legs when stoped at a lights is not that bad.

you gotta be a hardcore purist. I've owned a few cars without a/c while living in Austin and New Orleans. a little heat won't kill you (actually it can).

It gets warmer in the cockpit.

I took mine out. Also here in GA. I got about $200 for all the parts. Plus the weight savings and declutter benefit. If it doesn't work why spend a fortune on a system that is going to be only marginally effective anyway?

Just finished removing mine. Wasn't working any way and here in Michigan not really needed. I'm now tracking down parts to back date the heat. Sure cleans up the engine compartment.

Took mine out this winter. It's a cab and never used it anyway. I am presently planning on plumbing the fresh air blower to the side and center vents.

1980 SC. Pulled out the compressor and evaporator in the engine compartment and was happy that I took out over 40 lbs in the rear. Then 5 years later, I removed the rest of it - the blower and condenser and evaporator and the 19 feet of hoses. Was amazed at how heavy the garbage can was - must be another 30 plus pounds. All is out now.

I'm triple black in San Diego, so the car can get warm but it's not humid. I don't mind as much as my passengers do, but f'em. The system wasn't capable anyway.

Lighter is better. I removed the bumperettes and the rear seat backs and the spare tire and jack and the car feel better every time I pull weight out. I think I've taken about 140 out already and the interior should yield the same once I go with lighter seats and an RS interior kit.

Less is more. Open the sun roof and roll on the throttle.

I would be interested to see how that worked out, I pulled my fan and coil out of the smugglers box, but if a guy could utilize the side footwell blowers it would be nice to have at least air blowing on you (roughly the same as my old A/C)

A/C removal

83 SC - took out the A/C and all the related components two years ago. Definitely more air flow through the engine grill. While I was at it I took out the heater blower and backdated the heater system. Lastly removed all the cruise control components too - the engine has never been easier to work on. I live in Southern Calif. and it does get hot but the A/C never worked worth a damn anyway so I couldn't see the good sense sense in dragging it around anymore.

86-89 Carrera w/out AC -- what comes out the dash vents?
I used the above post as a guideline. It seems to me that for my '87 I need to connect 2 Y's part number 911.571.039.01 to each side of the fresh air blower. The dual out end to the old A/C hose and the old fresh air hose on the drivers side and the center vent hose and the old hose to the mixer box on the passenger side. That is the plan so far. I hope this will do it. I would appreciate any advice confirming or correcting this plan from any Pelicans out there.
Thanks,
Ken

I took my nonfunctioning A/C out a couple months ago here in atlanta. I have made it this far without ever owning a car with A/C so why stop now? I do have a mild obsession with minimalism with my vehicles ,though. Oh well, at least my car is black on black ha ha !
