Conventional oil or synthetic

Hi everyone. My Porsche has a 1987 3.2 in it and I’ve alway run 20/50 conventional oil. Courious as to what others are using and if synthetic might be in the future.

Brad Penn Oil - 20W-50 Partial Synthetic Racing Oil

This is based on the recommendations of many people, included the previous owner of my car.

Conventional and Brad Penn will make your engine dirty inside, not last as long and not dissipate heat as well. Any racing oil is out as they lack detergents and other additives. Zinc is very important. I researched this a while back and the oil with a significant amount of Zinc, 100 Syn. and designed for hotter running, air cooled engines is Mobile One V twin. There are likely other good choices but most important is syn and high zinc. At $13 a qt Mobile one V twin is not cheap but that is what I use. Inside of the engine always looks new.

Valvoline racing 20/50 for me since my rebuild. Smoother and quieter than the synthetic I used to use, for sure.
Got to love an oil thread

Wow,
Been using Brad Penn for 7 years in this car. When I got this car the valve covers were chocolate colored stained, after 3 Brad Penn changes the next valve adjust showed an internal surface inspection that appeared new. Brad Penn has a very aggressive additive package. Whoda thunk?

Porsche made our cars. They say to use Porsche 10/60 synthetic oil. Also has a cool can. Interesting that we use Porsche original parts on our cars when we can but so many do not believe their oil to be the best.

Some people may use Porsche original parts and others upgrade with better designed items. There are a number of Porsche mechanics and enthusiasts that have more experience with these older cars than the combined knowledge of those currently working at Porsche, and certainly more than those in the marketing department making these assertions about what oil to use. They are trying to sell the brand and have zero vested interest in our cars.

Haven't read such a ridiculous statement in a while.

Porsche in supporting these old classics is the only institution out there keeping this hobby alive long term.

Interesting reading. My conversations with my local experts confirm this as well. That said, your car, your money, your choice.

I see no change in M1 15w-50 and will continue to use it in my cars.

The bigger issue is that almost no one actually drives their old 911 7500 miles to justify an oil change.
Whatever oil you use will just be wasted on the typical 500 mile annual oil change, LOL

If Synth existed in 1987, you can be sure the owner's manual would say to use Synth.

Lots of us use M1 15/50 Synth.
Who runs non-ZDDP fortified Synthetic oil that is not 20w-50?

This is a religion. Anyway my 86 ,3.2 with 90,000 miles. About 3 years ago I switched from Castrol 20 -50 to Liquid Moly. Started seeing oil leaks at the cam covers. Switched back to Castrol, no leaks for a year. Engine runs great, never been torn down or re sealed. Owned for 15 years.

I was searching Castrol GTX the other day and couldn't find the ZDDP content. Not a good sign.

Then you must not read much.

Perhaps I should have said, Porsche’s interest in our old air cooled cars falls well behind their interest in selling new SUVs, sedans, etc. and I don’t fault them for this. The overpriced “classic” parts they sell, including a “vintage”-look modern GPS head unit and oil in a metal can, doesn’t convince me that they are the “only institution out there keeping this hobby alive long term.” There are an incredible number on these boards alone that I will give more credit to this end.
