Theoretical Question

I doubt anyone has done this before, but what would be the possibilities for placing an M96 engine into a 911 chassis, more specifically an SC? I have a Boxster with an engine that is worth significantly more than the car, and if the car was damaged in an accident it would almost certainly be totaled. I know the best thing to do would be buy a Boxster with a blown engine, but would it be feasible without major rebuilding of the chassis to put the engine, drivetrain, harness, et al into a 911 SC?

Sounds backwards to me.
Might have a hard time with setting up the cooling system, wiring for ECU etc.

I'd rather have an air-cooled motor in a Boxster...

Water Car - why? :)

There have been a few threads about grafting a water cooled Porsche engine into an air cooled 911 body, and it sound like a royal PITA. I think I'd consider trading/selling the engine and using the proceeds toward the acquisition of something more simple to install. Cheers

here are 2 threads of similar projects
PeteVb water cooled build

BoxsterGt water cooled build

I know of several of these currently in progress, most are using 964 or 993 chassis. Most are doing it because the enjoy a challenging project. If it were me I'd buy a water cooled chassis and go from there

+1 on the wrng way/dirrection.....there are incredibly cheap Boxsters available with blown engines and low miles....and if you can get over your state's registration and emissions issues....I'd much rather have a "proper" air-cooled engine w/o the RMS seal problems, etc.....in a modern 986 chassis. Hmm....already confgured for the inevetable front-oil cooler upgrade !!

As with any custom work, anything is possible so long as the funds are limitless. There is obviously a lot of fitment work associated with the cooling system.

A more "conventional" way to do it would be to try copy the layout of the Boxster and get air to the front-mounted radiators through the bumper section. There might be a way to mount radiators in the rear fender wells similar to the mounting position of the Ruf Yellow bird intercoolers, although you probably would need sizeable inlet holes in the rear fenders too.

I believe I have read where someone here did go through such a conversion. Keep searching here. You may also want to talk to TRE motorsports and Patrick Motorsports. Both of these companies, from what I understand, do conversion work and if they haven't done water cooled conversions, maybe they can lead you to someone that does.

Put the motor in a 914. And give it boost!
