The last SC....
Can anyone give me a ballpark as to how close my 1983 Targa is to being the last SC built? The door tag says 9/82, and I know it was sold at the dealer in 12/82. I assume there is a way from the VIN to determine the sequential number of manufacture. Some of you guys may even know when the factory switched from building the SC to the 84 Carrera.
Its amazing the thoughts that come to a persons mind as they spend a saturday afternooon in the garage working on a car that they love ![]() Thanks and have a great weekend everybody.... |

9/82 would probably be one of the first '83 MY cars built.

I believe it is pretty easy to figure out if you get a VIN decoder post. I think the way it works is if there were 2,275 Targas made in 1983 the vin number sets it up so that you know it's a Targa and then which one it is in the string of 2,275.

If you post the last 6 numbers of the VIN, we can tell you exactly where it falls in the '83 911 production. I'll tell you right now your car is an early '83. Thousands were built after yours.

I would think 83 SC's were built right up to Fall, 1983, typical model-year change-over date when the 84 Carrera's came on-board.....why would you think build-date of late 82 would be one of the last ?????

Model year change across the industry is July building for the next year.

Mine is 06/83, probably close to the end, but I highly doubt it's the last one. An 82 production date is nowhere near the end of the line.

A quick and easy test for where an '83 SC falls in terms of production is to look at the engine case. If there's a sump plate on the bottom, it's early-to-mid model year production. No sump plate and it's a mid-to-late model year production car.

I believe mine is one of the last 25 built in August 83. The last 4 digits are 2534. For Coupes the last US/Canada 911 SC VIN was 2559
Look at this site: Simon's Porsche 911 SC Site |

Porsche Red Book says......
83 targas were VIN WPOEA091CDS160001 to 1430 for a total of 1,430 built for USA. The 1983 model year was their D program (10th letter in VIN) and cars were built from August 1982 to July 1983. It goes on to say the letter E (4th letter in VIN) was for US targa and cab cars only.

Thanks for the education everyone. My VIN ends in 160515, making it about 1/3 of the way through the 1,430. Thanks again for the info...

edit: Just read the site for myself. There are in fact 2559 SC US coupes. Mine would be number 1946, with the last 4 digits being the production number out of 2559.

All car factories in Europe close down in August when the whole country goes on vacation. Conviently, this is also when they do any re-tooling necessary for the MY change-over.
Cars built in Sept. are always the first of the new MY and July cars are always among the last of the old year. August production cars are rare and could be either. |

I've been waiting for someone to chime in and say they have the last SC ever made. I'm hoping it's out there and in great shape.
Mine is 2071 so it's a fair way off.
