modifying SC spring plates for SWB car ?
as seen elsewhere on this forum (thanks Lars!) i want to take SC spring plates & have them shortened for my SWB project. simple enough? well... maybe. i've been after my machinist to do the deed for several months & finally what i'm getting from him is "... i wonder what tool i'm going to have to ruin in order to make this happen".
okay, it's spring steel. fair enough. does that make it (nearly) impossible to do? all feedback greatly appreciated. jerry |
Ask Pelican member "chris_seven" he does lots of that sort of LWB->SWB conversion.

There's nothing special about the steel used in the spring plates. Your machinist is just trying to weasel out of a low-dollar job!
This thread may be of interest, if you haven't seen it already. |
thanks for the tip. i decided to dive in & give this a shot. a die grinder & FG cutoff wheel did the trick getting these cut to size. drilled new holes & cleaned it all up w/ a high speed carbide bit. 1.5 - 2 hours & they're done.
