His maximum range was 15.1 miles - yes, fifteen point one. He compared the performance to a 58 bug running on three cylinders.

Looks like he did a nice install, but from the sounds of his, uh, success...this does not seem to be a real threat to petrol. All the rotting dinosaurs underground still have some purpose. Whew.

Especially the "fate" of the project:
So, the EPorsche is off the road and it fate uncertain. I can't afford a new set of batteries...

I've considered an electric Porsche, but starting with a 914 so I wouldn't ruin a "good" car. While it is possible to get better performance (0-60 in 8 seconds or so) and distance (minimum 50 miles) with a better tuned setup - you still end up adding 1000lbs to the weight of the car.

I also know of a couple other guys who built an electric car but it only goes ONE QUARTER MILE per charge. Thats 0.25 miles.

On the other hand, it covers that quarter mile in, like, 8 seconds...

I know a guy who has an electric-powered VW 181 ("Thing") and he reports much better results than this guy. I think an electric 911 would be viable if you took pains to lighten it in the same manner as a track car, and used modern batteries. It would probably also make sense to change the gearing to be more compatible with the electric motor.

Actually, I think I'd rather see a 911 with an electric motor than one with a V8!

I have a friend who is very serious into this EV stuff. But he will be the first to admit that it is not very practical for a daily driver. Granted he does drive a 70s Citicar (production EV, looks like a cheese wedge) to and from school regularly (few miles r/t). For him the fun is in EV hotrodding - torque approaches infinity at zero RPM, we're talking 1200 amp controllers here. There are a few EV drag races here on the west coast and that is what these guys are building for. They can outrun Vipers in the 1/8th mile.

I have seen a few 914 EVs and also a very well done 944 but never a 911.

hybrids

I wonder how long it will be until we see hybrid engined sports cars. With all the torque, and thus rapid acceleration , available using electric motors, but with the start up, power generation, and speed/horsies produced by a smaller? gas engine. Think Toyota's Prius or Honda's version hyped up on Porsche steroids. (Is that sacrilege? Don't kill me outright! )I don't think pure electric cars will be viable for a while due to battery issues. They may eventually become a legitimate option, but that will be through something along the lines of fuel cells or whatnot (the Back to the Future DeLorean?), and are going to take a while. Any thoughts or knowledge on this one? Roy

PS- and no, I can't imagine doing this to a Porsche. A kit car maybe, but not to a legitimate car of worth.
