hood badge restoration

hey guys i have an 74 911 orange hood badge, my wife wanted to have it restored for fathers day, but i thought it may lower the value of the car, what do we think about that? old or restored

Post a pic of front and rear, if correct early orange badge, I would keep it like it is, unless it is very ruined. I think the transition from orange/red was 73/74.

Generally, unrestored will have higher value unless it's completely trashed--I'm talking about the badge here, not the entire car. The value change to the whole car due to a restored badge is probably not even a consideration outside of the concours circuit, IMO.

Does anyone restore / work on these??
The offending pic is from a 68 I had parted, I know some of the discoloration is the clear, but afraid to polish it as what do you do when the gold go's away??
For the righr price I would move it to one of the other cars.
Anyone out there doing it??

If it were me, I would do some research to determine what the factory correct colors were. I would then break out some fine detail paint brushes and have a fabulous few hours of meticulous painting.

I do not know of anyone who restors these.

No wonder few people know how to restore these early hood badges.

I got a bid last Dec from Allan to restore my 71 badge. $325, insured shipping. I opted to keep the badge original and instead purchased a very nice $45 orange replica from St0ddards for my restoration.

I don't think original badges ever looked like that. I mean, it's beautiful, but Porsche didn't put a badge on their cars that had a mirror shine around the horse that I know of.

Thanks folks, awsome work by Allen, well looks to have given me the courage to at least polish this one for now. No cracks ect in the enamal, maybe a polish and try to replate the gold, we have a vendor that puts gold on some contacts we make for a customer.
And if it all gos to hell, I can do something like Shaun.

early hood badges

I sent my original 1973 911 T hood badge to Allan recently. One of the rear posts was gone and the orange enamel was chipped out. What came back a few weeks later was simply amazing. Cost was $285.00 ( but then theres shipping & currency exchange fees ).

Very happy with it. Plus Allan advised to close the hood by using the front corners, not pushing on the badge, doing that cracks the enamel.

Is the part number for an orange bar different? (if they do have a number, I did not notice last time I looked)

I have a badge that does have a different color, and has some age to it. I will grab a picture when I get home!

According to a recent posting (1-24-11) on the 356 Registry forum, Allen Heywood has passed away.
