Sugar scoop H4 installation questions
I like the look of sugar scoops so I'm going to do the economic upgrade using Hella 70477s sold by our host. Its hard to tell in pictures ... are these lenses flat or curved like original H1 sealed bulbs? I have installed two relays (one for low beam on both sides and one of high beam on both sides) and am wondering if my stock wiring and plastic wire ends can handle the 55w bulbs? I scoured the forum but didnt find any guidance on relays and this style H4 upgrade. Thanks.

The lens is flat and is a direct replacement for the sealed beam lamp. They do NOT have the same performance as the euro H4s....

I upgraded from the sealed beams to these headlamps. They are nearly flat faced lenses. I have the relay kit our host sells and with the original wiring and 55w bulbs, the lights are one hellava lot brighter than the sealed beams.

Would the Cibie H4 replacements be as good as euro H4s? I don't know whether they have flat or round lenses.

Are they less effctive than the Euro H4s because of the beam pattern?

They DO have basically the same beam pattern and equal 'performance' as the 'Euro' H4. Brightness depends on what bulb you put in it. Not all Hella H4's have flat faces. The Cibies are very good H4 lights Theirs are not flat faced. Graham, you should double check with Pelican (or someone)... Hella (and Bosch) also make convex faced H4's that fit sugar scoops. The 70477's that I looked up do not look like the lenses on the 'flat-faced' Hellas. See below: Last edited by tcar; 01-30-2011 at 05:56 PM.. |

DOT vs "E Code" H4 lamps
Quote:
Are you comparing the US/DOT approved Hella H4 lamps to the Bosch H4 Euro units (that replaces the sugar scoops). If so, I would agree. However, I would be surprised to find much of a noticeable difference between the Hella H4 Euro spec lamps (that allow you to retain the sugar scoops but are for "off road only in the US") and the Bosch units. Did you have a first hand comparison - with all else remaining the same? I'm assuming E-spec is pretty standard with regard to beam pattern. From there it should be a matter of power and bulbs - which can be the same for any H4 lamp. Thanks, Gordo
