newbe 911 exhaust question
 

Im a newer owner of a 1986 911 and am interest in new exhaust system. Ive been looking at the FabSpeed exhaust with the cat cut out, if I do this system do I also have to install a new chip or am I all right with the stock chip?

You certainly live in a great place!

What you do is going to depend an several things
what do you use the car for?
how much $ are you willing to spend?
how much noise do you want to put up w/?
other mads?

In general it's best to use a custom chip burned from #s generated on a dyno or from using an LM1 or such.

The Motronic does have a limited ability to compensate for minor exhaust changes though.

If you go to a full header setup a chip would certainly be best

Steve Wong has a great rep and also has some off the shelf chips that may be all you need, 911 Chips

thanks for the info, I drive the car nice days in the summer, noise doesnt bother me that much not over bearing,$ wise $2000 was around the number I was looking at , Thanks again Bob

You wouldn't need a new chip. But a new chip would improve drivability.

The most favored chip in these parts is the Steve Wong chip. 911CHIPS - Performance Chip Tuning for the Porsche 911

I installed on of Steve's chips on my dad's 88 and it transformed the car. The chip was far more noticeable change than the exhaust change.

You could probably get 90% of the bang for 10% of the cost if you just get a good cat-bypass and freeflow muffler + chip

Chips open up the limitations that smog rules and engineers chose to impose on the engine. You may or may not lose a few MPG but the results are nice.

On exhaust systems....I'm a proponent of using good solid stock items or upgraded facsimiles. SSI heat exchangers, or a set of 993s with modded flanges with a simple banana muffler of cat/turbo is my favorite. Not as bling bling but 1/3 to 1/2 of the gold plated options.

Mine is simple, easy to maintain and sounds great. O2 bung is behind the 90 on the right.

I installed a Fabspeed one in,dual out muffler as well as a MK premuffler combined with a Steve Wong chip on my 89 ...
Great quality,not too loud as the Fabspeed muffler is a solid unit and as far as performance gains,i'm sure all that helps a little but it's all the mental HP gain ( sound ) that makes it worthwhile :)
You can't go wrong,just remember,you get what you pay for... if you go cheap you might not be happy with the results !

Cat bypass and fabspeed muffler delete ..... I know different heart in the beast but its really really loud .....

for any one thinking the same mod on an SC just a little warning , its loud .........

Bob, I just installed the Fab Speed muffler with cat delete, the muffler is awesome! Extremly well made in design and sound. Our host does sell them and they are shipped directly from the factory to you. If you need any tips on install, pm me, I got most my tips from everyone here and it made a huge difference. Enjoy!!

I have the bypass and dual exhaust from Fabspeed on my 87. Works well for me!

Ranking in cost + claimed gains (IMHO):
bypass
bypass+muffler
SSIs + muffler (new muffler and oil lines required)
Headers+muffler (new muffler and oil lines required)
Adding a chip to any of the above

Certain race muffler systems can be quite expensive, but give proven results in power and sound. Your $2000 should cover almost everything you see above, though the chip may limit the exhaust systems you can choose from, new, to stay under the $2k limit.

You can find very good quality exhaust systems for sale new on our Host's site and also there are usually several different types for sale in the classified section. If you post a WTB you will get several offers. Personally, I'm a huge M&K fan having run 3 of Ben's mufflers so far. Quality, fit, finish, and sound are all top notch.

My header/muffler system will bust your budget unfortunately. Best bang for your budget is the M&K cat bypass and single in with single or dual outlet and a SW Chip.
For the 3.2L Carrera any header having less than 1 5/8" primaries, such as SSI, will not add any power over the cat bypass.

I also have the Fabspeed Euro Pre-Muf and one in /dual out Muffler with the SW chip on my 88
