Fixing odometer
 

The odometer (total and trip) on my speedo suffers from a common ailment: sometimes it works, sometimes it don't (more often)...

I happen to have the "guts" of a working speedo from a 70'T. This one still has metal gears unlike my 74' which has plastic ones, I believe.

Is it possible to transplant them into the a 74' speedo ? will it work ? both are mechanical, but...

My 74 also has a funky, (inoperative) odometer.

Page 209 in the 101 projects book has a good write up on it. I have just had a few more pressing issues.

I would say you have to take them both apart and compare the two gears. Replacement gears are available. I have done it, but them i twacked the needle and screwed the all works and ended up having to send it in anyway, lost time and money but, oh so much experience..

North Hollywood Speedo or Palo Alto Speedo. Quality work and fair prices. To keep your Porsche odometer healthy - never ever reset the trip meter when the car is moving.

Where can you get replacement parts? NHS and PAS will not sell them outright..

The gear itself is a cheap-easy fix but I snapped off the "speedo-pointer" when re-assembling the thing and had to send it to North Hollywood who did a great job btw

I believe Wayne (Pelican) is now selling those also.

Not a hard fix, just be careful and patient removing the needle.

FYI to anyone who's tripometer is not working:

A couple of years ago, I sent my speedometer to North Hollywood Speedometer for a rebuild. My odometer was working fine, but the speedo was not.

After I got it back, everything was working fine except the trip odometer, which worked before. I found that the reset button wasn't releasing all the way, which was preventing the numbers from turning. It loosened up after a bunch of resets, but I always make sure that it has fully released each time I reset.

Sorry to piggyback. I did the gear fix last summer which worked fine till last week when I noticed my odometer jumped from 177xxx to 277xxx. How the heck do I fix that!?

Not sure how it happened unless something went back together crooked, but if you take it back apart you can "adjust" the mileage to where it should be.
