Turn signal lens trim repaint?
Repost from paint bodywork...
Anyone repaint the silver or black trim around the lens on an early 911? Mine are black and in good condition and I was going to switch it to silver. If its just paint, can i just strip the black with some ?????? and then repaint with .... what kind of paint would work? a silver paint pen? thanks!! |

I have painted mine, but removing all of one color of paint around the inside edges with steel wool or fine grade sandpaper might be a bit of a job. It's OK if you have the time to devote. Try it first. For black (and maybe the silver too), I would consider the type of paint that bonds to plastic they have now. When I last did some, I don't think they had that. For silver, you should be able to get a chrome paint - preferably, but if not a good silver paint would do. It's a minor job and really improves the looks, especially if you polish the outsides of the lenses at the same time.

took mine fronts off and one has the black painted really nicely on the outside... the other has the black painted on the inside which is flaking off. I think the ones with the paint on the inside all end up coming off due to its exposure to the weather stripping and moisture being stuck there.
So is the silver supposed to be painted on the inside or outside? |

I have done this.
Picked up a pair of slightly used lenses, but the paint (black in my case) was coming off in places. Spent an afternoon scraping (bought a small carving chisel set - inexpensive, with several different radius blades). Used those and fine sandpaper. Followed up with black paint for plastic, and polished the outside of lenses. Looks 100% better than the cracked ones previously on the car. Takes patience, for the most part. |
