What to build next?
OK, so I sold my 964 last spring and bought a M3 that I made into a track car, and now that I just sold it, (couldnt get past the point that it wasnt a p-car) I'm in the market for another project. Not looking for a daily driver, and I'm certainly not a purist. Would like a fun AX car with the occasional DE. Just dont have the time to club race or do more than 1 DE a year anymore. I either want a 69-73 car that I will put a 3.2 into, or just go for another 964. Of course I would a 993, but not enough funds for that right now. It will have a roll bar and probably no interior other than the dash/door panels. I also thought about getting a 74-89 but if I do that, I will either backdate it to a longhood, or update it to a 964 look. I've had a few of both of these cars and while I do like the newness of the 964, (power windows, doors shut nicely, etc) I still like the rawness of the longhoods. And no, I dont want to have a built 2.4, 2.7 or 3.0, etc. Its really two complete directions I could go in and actually the prices on these two directions are very close.
Here's a few of my older builds.. Cars So, what should it be and why??? |
wow, nobody huh? ok, I'm on my own then.. :)

1988 e30 m3 DTM wersteiner or jagermeister with 2001 m5 motor in it or the 01-06 m3 motor

I think you need to go early car. Seems like you were happiest with that built green car you had. One of my all time favorites! What happened to it?

Do an IROC car (or SCrs) - I'd love to see you do one of those with your skills.
Base it on a 915 carrera - or something like this... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/586567-sale-1983-911sc-de-car-reduced-price.html |
914 - 6 (you said AX)
Or... Boxster with a 3.6. Great Excellence "How to" article on that last year. Just Ideas, the longhood sounds more up your alley |
Long hood street legal track car.
I just happen to have an extra 71T non-sunroof coupe with blown engine. Let me know if you want details. Just up the road in TN. :D |
Here's what you should do. Buy a '69 roller and strip it down to the bare tub. Sell both bumpers, both front fenders and the hood. Cut off the rear fenders and thrown them away. Remove the doors and buy some fiberglass replacements. Buy a fiberglass hood. Get rid of all the glass and buy a lexan windshield. Now, put it on a rotisserie and paint it. Then, add back the suspension/brakes/wheels and the drivetrain. Inside, add a seat/harnesses, some gauges, and a lightweight rollbar. Install the lexan windshield and the FG doors and hood.
You're done. What you will have is an open-wheel 911 that is nothing more than a painted tub with a lexan windshield (no other windows), 2 fiberglass doors and a fiberglass hood. I figure the whole thing should weigh no more than 1500 or so lbs. Tune your motor to about 350 bhp. You can buy the widest wheels/tires you want as there will be no fenders to rub against. Now THAT would be fun. |
narrow body 914-6 conversion with a 3.2 heart....
|
Do a boosted motor for an early chassis.

Why not build a 964 Carrera 4 with a 1976 912E Volkswagen engine?
It wouldn't be overly expensive to get both cars and when you're done you will not only have the most unique 911 in the world, but you will have the pleasure of really annoying and confusing a whole bunch of people while you document the build. |
Oh, and you could put a 959 body kit on it.
|
I have been thinking the same thing. I can't get my mind of a Boxster with a 3.4/3.6 996 motor swap. I just recently saw a fiberglass hard top that made a Cayman look and I could not help myself thinking what a great car that could potentially be. Considering the buy-in cost of the base chassis this could be a no-brainer.
Of course, its not a 911. So the next choice would be a narrow body SC/Carrera/964 with a turbo drivetrain. Something with a reliable 425-450 would be about right. Keep the outside smooth and simple and strip the weight out of it. |
Hmmm this is a tough one. I have ridden in a 3.2 longhood and would prefer a higher revving engine. It loses some of the sould with a 3.2 lump out back. Though the more power/torque sure is nice to have.

pre 75 tub (no smog if you're in CA)
backdate if necessary, but no flares (NARROW BODY) AC with all the updated improvements Stock 3.6+ G50 Weidman's 16x7's that fit under stock fenders Sticky R-Compound 225/50's all around Prototipo, Scheel's Nice but not-too-nice OEM color repaint Spec 911 style suspension Then drive it every day. If you don't build it, I will (someday...);) I didn't look at your previous builds, but this one is kicking around my brain right now. I don't care about being the fastest or the coolest, just want to enjoy an old car the way it was meant to be. |
just as i figured, you guys are all over the map. just as I am. lol.. hmm, gotta a couple leads going on, we will see...

What category?
In the 911 world, how about a tube-framed 993 chassis; multilink + tube frame ? Some Dzus fasteners and fiberglass panels. Maybe GT2 (Twin Turbo) or just a totally radical ITB 3.8 RSR motor... Or, older, I would go with a stripped 911 chassis, and build a Turbo RSR (3.0 probably) Awesomely balanced old car? 914-6 (conversion) with a high-revving 2.7RS motor and short gears. One of the best choices is probably a toasted '97 boxster that you rebuild with all the best GT3 gear you can get. GT3 control arms for adjustability, PCCB, GT3 motor and trans. Stay away from wet-sump late model motors. Also, the boxster/cayman transmission does not have the guts to support that GT3 motor. You could even find a crashed GT3R or GT3 Cup Car that needs a bunch of work. There are probably a few out there for not much $ (although you will spend it rebuilding that car). The possibilities are limitless... |
How about building a spec boxster and racing it? there was an article in Excellence last year about that. Probably the cheapest way to get into competition.
|
i thought about some other lines, but its got to be a 911.. and my budget couldnt buy all the lug nuts for a gt2.. lol
