85 carrera no start revisited

my 85 carrera doesn't start after 13 month storage. i visited several tech articles & have found the following: DME relay pin 86 +12v, pin 30 +12v, pin87 +12v. dme itself +12v on pin18 &35. dme relay pin 87b NO VOLTAGE no fuel pump, can jump it, it runs, but still no go. cleaned all grounds. on dme connector had good ground on pins 16,17, 19, and 5. tested crank sensor 943 ohms between pin 25 and 26, had 1.2 vac while cranking. tested engine speed sensor open circuit between pin 8 and 27, had .1 vac while cranking. is it the speed sensor? will the bmw part work? where is it and how do you replace it?

If it fired up when jumping the pump that should lead you to check the DME relay. The speed/reference sensors don't typically fail from storage.

I would suggest flushing whatever fuel is left in the system as it has probably varnished. Most fuels (except non-ethanol blends) generally have a 45-60 day storage life. Then the ethanol and gas separate, then the gas varnishes and the ethanol turns to water. That causes all sorts of havoc on your pump, plastic/rubber fuel bits and injectors.

After that is done replace the DME relay. After running it for a warmup cycle or two, change the oil. All 12 quarts of it (undo an oil line to drain the oil between the cooler & thermostat).

When storing a vehicle there are products such as STABIL that prevent the above mentioned fuel problems, or reduce the damage.
