Question SCWDP members, which year is best?

Not that I'm about to jump aboard, but an ad in this morning's OREGONIAN caught my eye. The ad: "83 911SC 46K mi, 1 owner 18 years, slate blue, loaded, exceptional condition! $19,500. 360-576-2917" Okay, this is the last year for the SC, but is it the best? If not, which year is?

Well the '78s are special because they were the first of the breed.
The '79s get shafted...everytime you read about the advancements in the 911 line...they always skip '79.
The bastards.

Anyway, the later years are hampered with those newfangled oxygen sensors...but they do have those beautiful injector hard lines....
So, its a toss up.

Never mind Mr. Donkin fellas...he's just trying to tear us apart.

Sorry, Paul... it won't work...we DO have stickers now you know.

As Bruce Anderson says (he's a columnist in Panorama and Excellence, plus has done a couple of fabulous books about getting more performance out of your Porsche), "buy the newest Porsche you can afford."

Following that advice: If you want an SC, buy an '83 . . .

The '83 SCs have great engines, and a marvelous sound! But, one will need a few upgrades to ensure it "keeps on ticking" -- chain tensioners are vital.

The car in the ad looks to have decent mileage on it (I was told NOT to get one that had been sitting; you want it to be driven about 5-10K annually), and the price seems fair.

Cheers!

C.

I'd rate the 80-83 cars best, with the 83 beating out the previous 2 years because it's the first year you could get a factory convertible and it's the year Porsche went back to 160mph speedos for US cars - the early 80s cars top out at 85 mph (though most have been upgraded). The 78-79 cars are usually avoided because of the smog pumps. I'd say for that mileage, especially if the cars's been maintained properly, the price is pretty good.

"buy the newest Porsche you can afford."

I think BA needs to revise that old adage to: "Buy the best Porsche you can afford." That's usually not the same as the newest!!

All SC's are the result of the phenomenon where all the planets lined up and there was engineering bliss in Stuttgart. It will rarely, if ever, happen again.

As for the "buy the newest Porsche you can afford", I would much rather have a early RSR than a 2002 996. Newer is not always better.

P.S. We are on to your futile attempt to disrupt the internal structure of SCWDP by pitting year against year.

I suspect Paul (a diehard Longhood Loyalist) is attempting to set a trap. Ouch!!...what's this clamped on my ankle?

Of course, any year SC is the best SC!
Certainly the Weissach Edition, and the (one year only) Cabriolet are very desirable for their exclusivity. Other than that, there were minimal changes between model years.

SC owners, join the burgeoning ranks of the SCWDP, and know you've got one of the best 911's ever made!

If you like more HP, you might want to consider the 81-83 European models, power was raised to 204 HP

In 83, the cabriolet came back - so if you're into open air motoring, then that's the best year for you.

The data in the CD-type disc decodes easily into ASCII computer text as follows, using 8 bit binary:
*
"Beware the bearers of FALSE gifts & their BROKEN PROMISES. Much PAIN but still time. (Damaged Word). There is GOOD out there. We OPpose DECEPTION. Conduit CLOSING (BELL SOUND)”
*
The damaged word would appear to be intended as “BELIEVE”.

Leland..Doug! I'm shocked that you'd think I'd ever attempt to subvert the SCWDP! Well, maybe. But no, this time I wasn't. Just found the ad interesting, then wanted to know if there was a "best" SC. The early 911S guys do this all the time..'67 the first year, thru '73 the last. So really guys...this time I was playing it straight. Besides, I LOVE the SCWDP group, I really do. It's kind of the Porsche version of the MOPAR slant 6 club....somebody has to stick up for the low performance, but long lifespan, iron. It's nice to find guys like you willing to make the sacrifice.

87 is the best year.... not an SC, but you get a G50 trans, and power jumps to 214hp stock. You also have most of the updates that folks w/ the older cars want... torsion bars, wheels, ect. (not that I am biased for any reason...)

Ah, Sean.... The thread asked this question: "SCWDP members, which year is best?"

Now what does your '87 pasta-for-rod-bolts 3.2 have to do with the question?

Hey Sean, all the useless weight in your car makes it inferior to my <2700 lb 84.

I've got all your Horsepower and less weight because getting the HP back is easy.
Electric, motorized seat adjusters? And you call that a sportscar?
The miserably heavy g50 tranny?
A motorized Cab top to boot! Man...
A third obnoxious brake light adding just more weight.

I'm surprised it didn't come with a TV.

Okay Mark...but what makes it better than, say the '79 or 80? We longnoses can debate the merits of eache early S model until the cows come home. Each unique, each great..but the year to year changes do make them different. This doesn't work with the 911SC?

I have an 82...

The earlier cars I believe have larger intake ports which come in handy when extracting more power from the car...

the hard fuel injector lines are nicer in the later SC's

no smog pump...

But my car came with a 85mph speedo...
I just upgraded to a 170mph...(the 160 didn't have kmh too)

what gives...I heard the US used 85mph during 80-82???

thanks

MJ

Buy any SC...as long as it has SC in it, it is a glorious car!!!

and don't forget your SCWDP sticker too!!!!
